“Otherwise, they will teach you to follow all the detestable things they do in worshiping their gods, and you will sin against the Lord your God.”
Sometimes life can teach you things you do not want to learn. It always starts with you being in the wrong place, listening to the wrong people. You cannot go through life oblivious to your surroundings, though. I can remember working on my truck, and I was using what everyone calls “the knuckle buster” to back off a nut instead of using a socket. Well, “the knuckle buster” was not named that for fun, I found out.
This statement the Lord makes to the Israelites has been made to them multiple times, so it was not new to them. It was almost like they were listening, but it went in one ear and out the other. The Bible says that the Holy Spirit will guide you (John 16:13): “But when He, the Spirit of Truth, comes, He will guide you into all the truth [full and complete truth]. For He will not speak on His own initiative, but He will speak whatever He hears [from the Father—the message regarding the Son], and He will disclose to you what is to come [in the future].”
Today, realize that you have a guide, the Holy Spirit, and He is always speaking to you, wanting you to follow the Lord. Sometimes your path seems easy, and sometimes it might get hard, but realize you are being guided by the Holy Spirit. When a car goes off the highway for a short period of time, everyone in the car can feel the difference between the road and gravel. You cannot always see where you are going, but you can listen to the Holy Spirit, and He will tell you when you are going off the road, prompting you to get back on the road. The question is, are you listening?
That afternoon, working on my truck, the “knuckle buster” was closer than the correct tool, so I used it and learned a good lesson. Your guide will lead you into perfect peace if you let Him, and will never leave you (Joshua 1:9). Ask the Holy Spirit to guide you, ask Him to speak to you all day, ask Him to show you the traps and the knuckle busters of life so you can avoid them. Listen, your guide is talking.
Prayer: Father, help me to see the rabbit trails Satan tries to get me to go down before I turn onto them. Help me to listen to Your Holy Spirit and heed His guidance. In Jesus’ name, amen.
