The Wrong Card Game

Deuteronomy 18: 10-13

“Let no one be found among you who sacrifices their son or daughter in the fire, who practices divination or sorcery, interprets omens, engages in witchcraft, or casts spells, or who is a medium or spiritist or who consults the dead. …”

An omen (also called portent or presage) is a phenomenon that is believed to foretell the future, often signifying the advent of change. People in ancient times believed that omens bring a divine message from their gods.

I think even in today’s world I would get 100% of the people to agree that sacrificing your children by throwing them into the fire is bad. I would even go so far as to think a majority of the people would agree that casting spells, practicing witchcraft, or being a medium who talks to the dead is not good either.

Above is the definition of the word “omen.” In today’s world, I think we’d call this “a sign” or “fate.” The word omen seems so medieval. Nonetheless, God calls out the omen interpreters and says this also is not good.

Today, no one says omen anymore, but they do read horoscopes based upon celestial bodies and their position, which will tell someone about their future. I am sure you have sat around with your friends and said that I am a Gemini or a Sagittarius or one of the other zodiac signs. The zodiac signs are supposed to tell you something about yourself, like personality and habits. This also is not good.

You see, the nations God was going to wipe out in Canaan all practiced the same things. These practices are not how God would have you get comfortable with your future or come to terms with your personality. 1 Corinthians 10:26 says, “For, ‘The earth is the Lord’s, and everything in it.’” Yes, everything, even your personality, is part of God’s plan. Your travels thus far are part of His plan. Your victories and even your losses are also.

Believing in omens is like taking a mystery ticket from an airline. Your destination may not be where you wanted to go. You may get excited about having it at first, but when you land in Midland, TX, or Abilene, TX, hoping to land in the Caribbean, you may find yourself in a place you never wanted to be. God has a plan for you, and it is better than trusting in an omen. If you do practice these things, turn them over to the Lord and stop playing around with Satan’s card deck. He is sure to win or, at best, pull a fast one on you, promising you the Caribbean and giving you the desert.

Prayer: Father, I pray that I turn over all the unholy practices that are against You. Help us see them and point them out so we can identify them and never turn to them again. In Jesus’ name, amen.
