Spiritual Math Class

Deuteronomy 4:2

“Do not add to or subtract from these commands I am giving you. Just obey the commands of the Lord your God that I am giving you.”

Helping my daughters with their homework in math has been challenging.  To start off with, math is taught differently than back in the day.  I found myself having to learn the lesson all over again but this time using the methods that my daughter’s teacher used.  This proved to be challenging and rewarding.  I would start off with the way I used to do the problems only to figure out that my daughter did not understand any of it.  It was not until I read and learned how to attack the problem the way the teacher did in class that I was only able to gain some ground on the homework help.  Other times I was lost and could not understand, but that is a whole different story. 

We often do the same thing as Christians.  Our homework, as Christians, is to learn about the word of God and practice it.  The Bible says that the word was God and is God so if we learn it and practice it we are doing the will of God.  Pretty simple right?  Verse 2 in Deuteronomy is there for a reason because we do to God’s word what we do to math problems we don’t understand, we add or subtract things that should not be added or subtracted. 

We have a bad habit of humanizing God’s word.  Andrew Wolmack says that the truth you know will set you free but if you don’t know the whole truth you won’t be set free.  It is almost like we do half of math problem and call it good and we are shocked to find out we got it wrong. 

The word of God is sharper than a two edge sword and it is powerful in its whole form.  Imagine fighting with only the sword handle or just the blade with no handle.  God’s word is enough by itself to pierce men’s souls and His spirit is enough to raise men from the grave. 

Don’t stop short of whole truth today.  Just like a math problem that is not finished, your faith is not giant proof until you practice the whole truth daily.  Jesus says all he needs is faith the size of mustard seed and mountains can be moved.  Are you adding or subtracting when you should be keeping the commands of the Lord? You won’t understand calculus when you are first learning addition and subtraction. The faith journey you are on today is set there by the Lord. Just like a good math teacher, the Lord will only give problems you can solve. So today commit to learning the whole truth and don’t stop, you might just be a find yourself walking in victory instead of tiptoeing through mines fields.  

Prayer: Father, guide our hearts to you and help us to practice your word and its truth today being careful not to add or subtract from it but to simply keep the commands of the Lord our God has given us. I pray that we would seek the whole truth and commit to reading the word daily and asking the Holy Spirit to guide us and for us to never stop listening in Jesus’ name, amen.
