“Only do not rebel against the Lord, and do not be afraid of the people of the land, because we will devour them. Their protection is gone, but the Lord is with us. Do not be afraid of them.”
I remember times in grade school or in football practice where the teacher or the coach, speaking to the entire group, would give some instruction on an assignment or some football drill he said we were going to do next, and you always immediately heard the grumbling. This would only anger the coach or teacher, and they would become emboldened and make the assignment harder, or the drill last longer because of the grumbling.
Well, our Caleb was a guy named Jason Payones. He was a very strong, intimidating Hispanic who commanded respect and could play football very well. Nearly every drill the coach barked out, he was always the one who would let out a yell of excitement, and the coaches loved him for it. When all of the grumblers were running, the coach would often give him special authority over us, managing our running drills during and after practice. We all got through the drills fine, and everyone was tired, even Jason. His attitude in those times still sticks out and makes me smile. All of us wished, after the fact, that we would have acted like Jason, and maybe we would have gotten some special treatment, but every time, he stood out.
Life will hit you in all kinds of ways. Sometimes, you are given a special glimpse into the future, like the spies did in Numbers when scouting out the land. Although it is rare, it happens. Caleb was the Jason of the spies. He viewed the future with God and had a special spirit that gave him confidence that walking with the Lord enabled them to do mighty things. The other spies just saw the mountain without the Lord.
Caleb says in this verse, “But the Lord is with us.” Is that what you say when life hits your finances, your family, your job, your relationships? Are you like the other spies who just saw a problem and no solution? Caleb saw everything the other spies did, but he knew that the Lord was with him.
Today, recognize that the Lord is with you. Your life and all of your issues cannot be solved by worldly wisdom or self-help steps. They may make you feel a little better, but ultimately, they will not solve anything. Do not be afraid of the (….put your issue here…….) before you, because you will devour it. It has no protection; the Lord is with you. Do not be afraid.
Prayer: Father, help me to see You before me and to understand the power of Your mighty hand. I rest in Your providential hand going before me to level the mountains that I see. I thank You for always being there for me, even when I only see the struggle. In Jesus’ name, amen.
