Let It Go

Proverbs 3-5-6

5 Trust in the Lord with all your heart
    and lean not on your own understanding;
6  in all your ways submit to him,
    and he will make your paths straight.

Let It Go. What a concept! While most of us consider ourselves smart enough about most things, we all encounter this step of faith at some point. One of my daughters was learning how to spell when she was very young. I asked her to spell “cat,” and with complete confidence, she said, “Dad, it is spelled KAT!” I am glad to report that, as a young woman, she can spell cat the right way. She had to let it go. Her understanding of how to spell cat was not correct.

Proverbs 3 tells us to trust in the Lord with all your heart and do not lean on your own understanding. It goes on to say that we should submit to Him in all our ways, and He will make our paths straight. I read this verse, and the word “all” is used two times. Once to reference our heart and the other to reference our ways. It is as if all of our ways without the Lord need to be submitted to Him, and we don’t get to hold on to any of them.

2 Corinthians 5:17 tells us, “Therefore, if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.” There it is again, the word “all.” All things become new. We must walk this walk of faith knowing that we should not hold on to our understanding and be renewed by the washing of the Word of God daily. Those old habits? You must let them go. Those old friends? You must let them go. Those old addictions? You must let them go. All things have become new. Jesus does not need your old anything to do something new in your life. All He wants is your heart.

Walking by faith, not by sight, means understanding that you don’t need to see the destination; all you have to do is trust in God and keep moving forward. If you commit to letting go of your life and submitting all your ways to Him, you will see your paths straighten out. John 3:16 tells us that God so loved the world that He gave us His Son to die on a cross for the forgiveness of our sins. Jesus, dying on the cross, cried out, “It is finished!” He let His connection with His Father go and carried all of our sins so He could be the spotless Lamb that was sacrificed for us once and for all.

Let it go. We don’t have to carry the burden of sin, nor do we have to live in sin either. Strikingly, it is one of the hardest things to do: let it all go. There is an old expression, “You never see a U-Haul following a hearse.” Your old self likes to hold on to your past, and you wear that old self like a ball and chain. Today, choose to let it go. Give it all to Christ. Acknowledge Him in all your ways and learn to walk with open hands, giving everything in your life to Christ. Let it go.

Prayer: Father, help me let it all go. Help me to give it all to You with open arms and hands up and open. I give it all to You, Father. I know You will guide me and keep me in all of my ways, and You will never leave me or forsake me. Because of this, I choose to let it all go and turn and follow You. In Jesus’ name, amen.
