I am a do-it-yourself kind of person. I don’t always know exactly how to do something, but my motto has always been, “How hard can it be?” After getting in trouble a few times and realizing I was in over my head, I consulted the experts. They finished what I started using methods I did not know and tools I did not have. Long story short, you need the right tools for the job and know how to use them.
Paul was on his way to Jerusalem in Acts 21. He couldn’t just hop on a plane and arrive that afternoon. His journey took weeks by sea, with stops along the way. During this trip, Paul met with many believers who welcomed him because he had shared the gospel of grace with them.
These believers were mature followers of Jesus. Their lives were centered around Him. They spent time in God’s Word, gathered together, prayed, worshiped, and operated in the gifts of the Spirit. They were not just checking a box on Sundays or living one way around Christians and another way around the world. They were living Spirit-filled lives.
The Holy Spirit was active in their lives, even warning Paul through believers and prophets about what was coming. This is exactly what Jesus promised in John 14:26, “But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you.”
The Spirit-filled life is how Jesus intended His followers to live. The Holy Spirit teaches us, reminds us, and guides us. The book of Acts shows us that the work of the Spirit is not something from the past; it is a promise for believers today.
Just like I needed an expert to help me complete projects I could not do on my own, we need the Holy Spirit to equip us with what we cannot accomplish ourselves. The Holy Spirit is our “more skilled person.” Today, ask the Lord to fill you with His Spirit and help you walk in everything He has for you.
Prayer: Father, I want to be baptized in the Holy Spirit. I desire to use the gifts You speak about in the Bible: prophecy, tongues, words of knowledge, and many more. I want to live and operate like the believers in the book of Acts. Baptize me in Jesus’ name, amen.
