Breaking Up the Familiar

Acts 3:2

“Now a man who was lame from birth was being carried to the temple gate called Beautiful, where he was put every day to beg from those going into the temple courts.”

It was a common walk for Peter and John. Every day at 3 p.m., they would head to the temple courts to pray. No doubt they passed the same old structures, the same old houses, and even the same people day after day. We have routines we stick to every day. Whether your work requires a commute or you work from home, we all do our thing. The common coffee stop, the usual breakfast taco place, even the same old route to work with the same cars you always seem to get stuck behind—it all becomes very familiar. Some days, I confess, it gets boring. “God, I need something different because I see the same things every day. I feel stuck in a rut.”

This time, Peter and John came across the lame beggar at the temple courts. The only difference was that they had now been baptized in the Holy Spirit. The day before, Peter had preached, and over 3,000 people had chosen to follow Jesus. No, this walk would be different.

The beggar did what he always did and asked for something—anything. He was lame and could not do much for himself. Peter looked at him and said, “Look at us!” Peter reached down and told the beggar that he did not have silver or gold, but what he did have was the healing power of Jesus Christ through the Holy Spirit. He told the man to rise and walk, and immediately he was healed.

You never know who or what you will come across on that familiar path you take every day. Allowing the Holy Spirit to speak to us and guide us along the way, no matter how familiar the journey, should be our daily practice. You are a walking billboard for Christ everywhere you go. Peter and John certainly were, and after the lame man was healed, their influence grew tremendously.

What are you broadcasting on that familiar path you take every day? If the Lord brings a hurting soul your way, will you recognize it? We should be looking for those opportunities everywhere we go. “God, what do You want me to see today? Guide me into Your perfect peace and show me the path I am to walk today.”

A simple awareness of the Holy Spirit speaking to you could make a lifetime of difference to someone you pass every day. Be the light every day. Don’t just turn it on for Sunday morning.

Prayer: Father, help me to listen to You every day. Make me ready and willing to act upon Your guidance. Help me to be bold in the Lord and faithful wherever You lead me. In Jesus’ name, amen.
