Serve, Add Value, and Make a Difference

Genesis 41:9-13

Then the chief cupbearer said to Pharaoh, “Today I am reminded of my shortcomings. 10 Pharaoh was once angry with his servants, and he imprisoned the chief baker and me in the house of the captain of the guard. 11 Each of us had a dream the same night, and each dream had a meaning of its own. 12 Now a young Hebrew was there with us, a servant of the captain of the guard. We told him our dreams, and he interpreted them for us, giving each man the interpretation of his dream. 13 And things turned out exactly as he interpreted them to us: I was restored to my position, and the other man was impaled.”

It had been two years since the cupbearer got out of prison. It had been two years since he forgot to mention Joseph to Pharaoh. Two more years in prison for Joseph as well.

Pharaoh had two dreams, and they troubled him. Then the cupbearer remembered that Joseph could interpret dreams, and on this day, he was brought before Pharaoh to interpret them. The story goes on, and Joseph interprets Pharaoh’s dreams and gives him wise counsel as to what they mean and what to do. He was then made second in command over Egypt. From the prison floor to the palace floor in short order. What a change in Joseph’s life.

Most of us have not been put in charge of whole kingdoms, and most of us have not been rotting in prison for a long time either. For those of us who have seen prison time or been in charge of great things, this story means much more. The majority of us are just living life the best we know how. That is what Joseph was doing. He honored the Lord while being a slave and was put in charge of the house until the wife of Potiphar had him thrown into prison.

He honored the Lord and was put in charge of the prison. He interpreted the dreams of some fellow prisoners, and they came true, yet he was still left in prison for two more years. It seems like Joseph was making all the right moves and going nowhere.

You may feel that way today. You have been hustling and working hard, doing all you can for others and honoring the Lord with your time and talents, yet it seems like others are getting your promotions and raises. You may even see yourself as having all the talent, but it seems no one is noticing, while everyone seems to be using it.

There will come a day, maybe not today or tomorrow, but the Lord has not forgotten you. He will bring to mind someone who knows of the talent the good Lord has given you, and it will be used to serve someone else. That someone else could be the very person God uses to bless you. You will not know it when it happens. Your job is simply to do the will of the Father. That is it. He can handle the rest.

Be a great advocate for hard work on the job, and never let your ears cease to hear the Word every day. Stay alert and pray to the Lord to give you opportunities to use your talents to serve others. It is not about you, but about how you use what the Lord has given you. You have a cupbearer in your future.
