“So he said to me, ‘This is the word of the Lord to Zerubbabel: ‘Not by might nor by power, but by my Spirit,’ says the Lord Almighty.”
When I was in high school, I worked for an electrician named Joe Fussle. He still lives in Midland and is a good Christian man. This was before the battery-powered drills we use so much today. I would watch as Joe would screw in a screw using a screwdriver and make it seem so easy. When my time came to do the same, it would take me four times as long to screw that same screw in. Why? Joe had some super strong hands and forearms that could operate as if he were holding a battery-powered drill. Same screwdriver, same screw, but very different people using it.
Zerubbabel was the grandson of the last king of Judah before it fell to the Babylonians. He was born in Babylon and was the man in charge when the people of Judah returned to their homeland after the 70 years of exile. Zechariah was the prophet of God during this time, and the Lord downloads one of the best lines we see in the Bible in his book: “Not by might nor by power, but by My Spirit.” Big Z was to realign the people with following the Lord and also to rebuild the temple in Jerusalem. It was a big job, and Big Z was ready for it, not because he had tons of skilled workers and materials, which he had, but because the Lord was with him. The Spirit of the Lord was with Zerubbabel, and the Lord was working behind the scenes. It was not by the might of people or their skills, but because the Spirit of the Lord was with him.
You may be facing something huge like Big Z was. A task, a sickness, a relationship, a banking issue that promises to take not only your time but everyone around you. The Lord is telling us to realign our lives to follow Him, and He will make the mountains level ground (Zechariah 4:7). The Lord will allow tough times in your life to get your attention, and when you turn back to the Lord, His Spirit moves, and you begin to walk in victory.
The next time you face the mountains of life, take a few minutes and push pause on your brain. It is not by might nor by power, but by My Spirit, says the Lord. If God is the beginning and the end, the Alpha and Omega, then He has seen your issue and has provided a way of escape. 1 Corinthians 10:13 says just that:
“No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; He will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted,[c] he will also provide a way out so that you can endure it.”
Watch for the hand of the Lord in everything you do. Reading and studying your Bible gives us a roadmap for seeing God at work and for operating under His hand of grace and mercy. Today, watch for the hand of the Lord moving in your life. Listen to the Holy Spirit guide you in perfect peace concerning all you do.
Joe Fussle could drive screws using the same tools I had. The difference is that he had so much more power than I did, and the same task became easier and was finished faster. That sounds like something I would love to have repeated every day of my life, and it begins with recognizing that your might and power are no match for the awesome power of the Spirit of the Lord. It is time you let Him take control.
Prayer: Father, I relinquish my hold on trying to understand everything this crazy life throws at me. Instead, I will realize it is not by my own might or power of understanding, but by Your Spirit, says the Lord. In Jesus’ name, amen.
