The Delay

Habakkuk 2:3

“For the revelation awaits an appointed time; it speaks of the end and will not prove false.  Though linger, wait for it; it will certainly come and will not delay.”

Every kid awaits Christmas with much expectation. I can remember saying I cannot wait for Christmas when it was still 100 degrees outside. Sure enough, Christmas always came every December 25th like clockwork. I watched my own children do the same thing. Christmas seemed so far away when we were all sweating bullets in the summer, but you could count on it being here right on time every December 25th.

I wish we all had the same expectation for the promises of God. Sure, we read the Bible and pray, but for most of us, the promises of God seem a little out there, beyond the reality we call life in most cases. In fact, we seem to either forget God is working, or we just brush the promise off like the possibility of getting a pony for Christmas, it will never happen.

The hippopotamus song still makes me laugh, like that little girl is getting a real hippo for Christmas, right? Sadly, we often think the promises of God are like that song. We say, “That could be super cool if…” but in reality, we never expect it because the promise we read about, and the new life Jesus says is waiting on us if we follow Him, seems too far-fetched.

If you are one of these people, don’t feel bad; we all have been there. The Bible says that He will never leave us nor forsake us, but do you really feel like He is with you to begin with? Very good question. The answer is that Jesus never left you; you have turned your back on Him. Habakkuk writes down what the Lord said, and, in short, it reads, even if you have to linger or wait a while, the promise of God will certainly come and will not delay.

Ecclesiastes 3:1 says, “There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens:” Our job is not to shake our fist at God and say, “Where are you?” Rather, it is to sit and pray and ask the Lord, “What would you have me do during this time?”

Joyce Meyer said it best when she was asked what to do when your life seems like something you would rather flush: “Pour yourself into other people.” Jesus did just that. He spent His time pouring into His disciples. It is time we stop asking where God is and realize He never took His hands off and lost control. Psalm 23 was written because David knew that the Lord would be with him even in the darkest of times.

Spend some time praying and asking the Lord to show you His presence in the middle of the storm. Waiting could be the very thing you need while you realize He’s got the whole world in His hand.

Prayer: Father, never let me forget that You are always close by me. You leave the 99 to find the one, Lord. I pray that when I feel like the one who is lost and far away, I will stop and seek the Lord and listen to His voice that is always calling me to invite Him in. In Jesus’ name, amen.
