The Hand Of God

Nahum 1:3

“The Lord is slow to anger but great in power; the Lord will not leave the guilty unpunished.”

A different spin for today’s devotional. The Book of Nahum is only three chapters and talks about the fall of Nineveh. The same Nineveh that Jonah preached to and saw a radical move of the Lord. This city and nation had once again turned its back on the Lord, and this book prophesied the end of Nineveh.

We are seeing lawless and evil people take over our country, as well as evil, lawless people running many parts of our government. The Assyrian Empire was a world power at that time, and many times Judah fell under its foot. God sent Jonah to warn them, and they all repented. What a great story about a whole city turning to the Lord. It would have been better if the city had continued to follow the Lord, but if you read Nahum, it is clear they did not.

A couple of things we can pull out of Nahum is our verse today. The Lord is slow to anger but great in power, and He will not leave the guilty unpunished. It may look like the Lord has turned His head and let Satan ravage this country, but the Lord is watching, and the saints are praying.

There are still Nahums out there who believe what the Bible says about the Lord. You can believe in the car starting, but you will not go anywhere without the key. The Bible is the key for us Christians. It contains the promises that start our faith and finish our faith. Without it, we are just a bunch of parked cars with no keys to start them.

The second thing we can pull out is that evil has its day. God spoke through the prophets to tell the people that He was moving. Today, we have the Holy Spirit living inside of us, guiding us every day. Jesus said that the Helper will come. After the Holy Spirit showed up in the upper room, the world has not been the same. The Bible says that the gates of hell will not prevail against God’s church. It has not for over 2,000 years.

The same Bible and Torah that were inscribed in Nahum are what we read today. God will never leave us nor forsake us. This country was founded with the notion that God was at the center of government and the people, and without God, it would fail. We currently deal with a lot of crazy and ungodly things, but the Lord has not turned His face from this country.

Just like Nineveh, evil has its day. Today, pray that the hand of the Lord will raise up godly leaders in our government. Pray that moms and dads raise godly children and teach them about the Lord. Sin has always been enticing to anyone who looks at it. If we take a page out of history, sin has always lost. We are not in a chess game with Satan and sin. Satan was defeated when Jesus died on the cross and rose again. We have already won through Jesus. The grass withers and the flowers fade, but the word of the Lord will last forever. It is time to stick to the eternal word of God and run from sin. Just ask Nineveh how returning to sin worked out for them.

Prayer: Father, help me to run from sin. Help me to recognize it before it begins to rot the things of the Lord from my life. Help me to understand that it is only by Your power that we will walk in victory. In Jesus’ name, amen.
