“For a son dishonors his father, a daughter rises up against her mother, a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law- a man’s enemies are the members of his own household. But as for me, I watch in hope for the LORD, I wait for God my Savior; my God will hear me.”
As misery loves company, so anger implores solitude. I cannot think of a time, except for riots, when angry people are an attraction. As a parent, when I have become angry at the kids, I have not gotten the glowing approval of anyone. The exact opposite takes place; no one wants to be near you.
The Bible says not to sin in your anger, so getting angry is something we all find ourselves doing from time to time, but it becomes sin when you see it begin to turn away the people you love and start attracting the ones who are angry with you.
Our verse today reminds me of the conflict caused by sin. It talks about a son dishonoring his father and a daughter rising up against her mother, and goes on to include most family relationships. These breakdowns happen to all of us, especially in families. We spend most of our time with our families, and naturally, because of that, issues arise, and anger rises as well.
Verse 7 tells us where real Christians should land. It states, “As for me…” You have to make a personal choice to stop and not follow the path of anger. “As for me,” I decide to turn and not sin in your anger. Next, “I watch in hope for the Lord and wait for God my Savior, and He will hear me.” The path of righteousness is not lined with angry people or angry actions. It is paved with the fruit of the Spirit, not the fruit of sin.
Real Christians learn how to submit to the Lord, defuse the anger, wait for God to move, and trust that their prayers have been heard. You never see a farmer yelling at the crops to grow faster. The reason, yelling at plants to grow faster does not do any good. Just like letting anger get the best of you is not the place we need to go. A sermon I heard talked about real followers of Christ who keep following the Lord for the rest of their lives. They remain strong and stay engaged. Conflict, especially family conflict, is just one trigger Satan uses to pull us away from relying on God. Make verse 7 your prayer today.
Let’s pray.
Prayer: Father, today I choose to stay and watch in hope for You, Lord, to work in my situation. I choose to wait on the Lord and not try to fix things on my own. I trust I will hear You when You speak, and thank You for hearing my prayer. I give this situation to you to handle. Help me display the fruit of the Spirit every waking moment. In Jesus’ name, amen.
