Life After School

Amos 8:11

“The days are coming,” declares the Sovereign Lord, “when I will send a famine through the land– not a famine of food or a thirst for water, but a famine of hearing the words of the Lord.”

You cannot stay in class forever. Like everything else, school ends, and real life begins. For some, like in college, they make a profession out of going to school, never actually graduating, and instead, they just keep taking classes. For most of us, at some point, we have to stop going to class and go out and get a real job—one with a livable wage. Kevin O’Leary says in his book, “Some people confuse a hobby for a career. You have to have a career in order to enjoy your hobbies.” Life is expensive, and you have to plan for it.

James 1:2-4 says, “Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds, for you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness. And let steadfastness have its full effect, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing.”

It would not be a test if you could cheat off the professor. The testing of our faith requires us to go for a period of time without hearing the words of the Lord, but rather putting them into practice. Our verse today speaks of a famine, a period of time when no one will hear the words of the Lord.

In the Old Testament, the prophets were the mouthpieces of the Lord, and without them, no one heard from the Lord. Since Jesus Christ died on the cross and rose again, He sent us the Holy Spirit to guide us into all truth. Just like a test, we have to and will meet “trials of various kinds,” and it is in these trials that our faith is tested.

Will we reflect on the truth of the word of God and stand by it out, or will we cave to the pressure of sin? That is the question. For us to count it all joy, we must listen to the word of God and write it on the tablet of our hearts. When you put your faith in Christ and lean on the promises of God, you will become steadfast, lacking in nothing. In other words, you will see the trial when it appears and be ready to use your faith instead of caving in and letting sin have its way.

The teacher cannot teach you everything that life will. We have the best life coach, Jesus. God wrote the Bible in order for you to study it and show yourself approved. Jesus sent the Holy Spirit to be your guide in all truth. If your life looks like a famine right now, then it is time to dive into what God says about things and stop relying on your own understanding. “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding” (Proverbs 3:5).

Prayer: Father, help me not to cave in and trust myself during the trials of life. I pray that I will walk by faith and not by sight so that I may see You working in my life. I pray that I will trust You in all my ways and not lean on my own understanding. In Jesus’ name, amen.
