21 I will pardon my people’s crimes,
which I have not yet pardoned;
and I, the Lord, will make my home
in Jerusalem[a] with my people.”
You know what opinions are like, right? We all have them, and they can all stink at times. If you have ever been in a group chatting about the latest issue or agenda, you have been subjected to “The Opinionator.” That person who cannot wait to tell you his or her opinion on just about everything. They seem to dominate the conversation, and after a while, you just have to make them stop. Stop talking, that is, because every time this person opens his mouth, another opinion comes out.
Piggybacking on a sermon I heard today, let’s define subjective and objective truth. Subjective is defined as “based on a given person’s experience, understanding, and feelings; personal or individual,” while objective is defined as “existing independent of or external to the mind; actual or real.”
For you to move forward with Christ in your life, you must get one thing absolutely right, and that is that the Bible is the infallible Word of God and is “objective truth.” Meaning that it is external to our minds or emotions and completely independent of our person. When you read it, you must understand that you are not reading someone’s opinions or judgments based upon personal feelings, but rather words straight from the mouth of God, who created you and the universe. Who is your guide in this endeavor? His name is the Holy Spirit. Colossians 1:25–27 reads, “I became its servant by the commission God gave me to fully proclaim to you the word of God, the mystery that was hidden for ages and generations but is now revealed to His saints. To them God has chosen to make known among the Gentiles the glorious riches of this mystery, which is Christ in you, the hope of glory.”
It all starts with Christ in you. Reading a geologic paper about an oil field makes no sense to a person who has not studied geology, but to a geologist, it opens up a wonderful understanding of the mechanics of what makes that oil field produce oil. You have to have Christ in your life for the Word of God to open up; it is that simple. You must understand it is not a book of opinions or stories, but a life manual straight from the mouth of God Himself.
If you find yourself starting your biblical conversations with words like “in my opinion,” it is time to stop stating opinions and start repeating truth. You cannot add to it or take away from it. The Word of God and His church will stand the test of time, and the gates of hell will not prevail against it. The subjective Bible needs to be replaced with the objective Bible. “You shall know the truth, and the truth shall set you free.”
Prayer: Father, help me know the Word of God well enough to quote it and use it like a sword. Help me stop using a subjective mindset based on my own feelings and emotions, and instead on what Your Word says. I pray that I begin to use the Word like it is straight from the mouth of Jesus. In Jesus’ name, amen.
