“The beginning of strife is like letting out water, so abandon the quarrel before it breaks out.”
“He who has a crooked mind finds no good, and he who is perverted in his language falls into evil.”
“A joyful heart is good medicine, but a broken spirit dries up the bones.”
“He who restrains his words has knowledge, and he who has a cool spirit is a man of understanding.
Even a fool, when he keeps silent, is considered wise; when he closes his lips, he is counted prudent.”
You cannot say it better than Solomon. These verses are like food to a starving man. Rather than go into a devotional, allow me to download some key points that have helped me over the years. Read them, meditate on them, and apply them to your life.
Verse 14, if you don’t find it anywhere else, you see it in black and white from the Lord; He would rather you not fight. If you start, it may become something you cannot contain.
Verse 20, don’t use profanity or perverted speech. Those who do seem to find people who act the same way, and the Bible says it is a door to evil.
Verse 22, your joyful heart can heal the ones around you, but a broken spirit can dry you up like a dead man’s bones and the ones around you. So pray to the Lord to help you, let the joy of the Lord be your strength.
Verse 27–28, it is better that you restrain your words rather than let your opinion be made known. Be quick to listen and slow to speak. Your opinion might be foolish, and opening your mouth and defending it may broadcast your foolishness, so be quick to listen and learn rather than always opening your mouth.
Just a few nuggets of wisdom that have helped me develop over the years that come straight from the Word of God. Proverbs is a book of wisdom written by Solomon and inspired by the one and only God who created everything, even you and me. Don’t think for a second that you know better than God. The Creator is always greater than the creation.
Prayer: Father, I pray that what comes out of my mouth will honor You. I pray that I will restrain myself and rely upon the wisdom of the Word of God instead of my own. Above all, I pray that I would learn to keep my foolishness quiet, restrain my words, and use them wisely. In Jesus’ name, amen.
