“Whoever loves discipline loves knowledge, but whoever hates correction is stupid.”
The definition of discipline is training expected to produce a specific character or pattern of behavior, especially training that produces moral or mental improvement. The definition of correction is the act of offering an improvement to replace a mistake, setting things right.
If you think about it, we are all under a discipline of sorts. We are disciplined in our work, in how we perform tasks, and in how we drive; we are even disciplined in our relationships, whether in friendships or marriages. Our verse today states that whoever loves this discipline loves knowledge, or another way to put it, they love getting smarter and more intelligent in whatever they are doing.
Let us consider correction now. Correcting involves being shown the correct way to do things or setting someone on the right path. The Bible says that anyone who hates correction is stupid. You cannot have discipline without correction. The two are married together like peas and carrots.
So, what is this verse really saying? Stupid behavior produces stupidity, while loving discipline produces someone who loves knowledge. If you have ever been around children, this point is very easy to see. Some kids listen and get smarter in how to behave, while others do not listen at all, and you continually have to correct them. It is like they hate correction, funny.
The Lord is working in us all the time, and discipline is a part of it. “Thank you, sir, may I have another?” comes to mind, without the fraternity initiation. The Bible says that the Lord disciplines those whom He loves, and if we put ourselves in the loving discipline mode, we get smarter and learn and grow in the Lord.
Today, commit to the learning process of becoming a wise follower of Christ by accepting discipline. Discipline yourself to read the Word every day. Discipline yourself to pray to the Lord every day. Discipline yourself to commit to change under the Lord’s guidance. After a while of doing this, you might just find yourself smart enough to pass along the discipline of the Lord to those around you.
Prayer: Father, help me to love Your discipline and to correct myself with Your help every day. I pray that You will show me the things in my life I need to clean up, and I ask for the Holy Spirit’s power to clean them up. In Jesus’ name, amen.
