“he said to them, ‘I have a dream that troubles me and I want to know what it means.”
My wife and daughters all have dreams every night. Nearly every morning, I hear the dream from the night before. Some are super crazy and random, like a rehash of the movie from the night before, and some, well, some are from the good Lord above. Having a mind like a steel trap, my wife remembers all of them, especially the God ones. Like the one where she was dreaming and saw Jesus on a white horse, and He rode up next to her, stretched out His hand, and asked if she was coming with Him. Those are the ones you know are from the Lord.
Nebuchadnezzar had a dream, and it troubled him. The Bible says that he had dreams, and his mind was troubled, and he could not sleep. So dreaming things was nothing new for him. In fact, I will bet he told his dreams to his servants or wise men quite often. They would come and listen and offer an explanation or an interpretation. This dream was different, though. It was one that troubled him greatly. He called the wise men again, but he was tired of the old explanations and interpretations. This time, he told them that if they didn’t tell him what his dream was and interpret it, he was going to kill all the wise men and crush their bones (verse 5). Thank the Lord Tina never puts that heavy on me.
The wise men tell us in verse 10 that no human can tell him the dream and interpret it, only the gods can do that, and they don’t live among the people. The wise men fail to give Nebby what he wants, and he orders the leader of the guards to kill every wise man in Babylon, which included Daniel and his friends, Shadrach, Meshach, and Benny. Daniel prayed and asked the Lord for the dream and its interpretation, and the Lord gave it to Daniel. Verse 28 says, “but there is a God in heaven who reveals mysteries….”
You can search for every wise man and woman on this earth to interpret your life, but the only one you need is Jesus. Just like Nebby could not find any wise man to interpret his dream, we often go searching for some meaning or reason for why all this is happening. The answer is Jesus. The guidebook is the Bible. You are on a journey for Christ. He gives us what we need at that moment to make the next step, but no more. Sometimes He will give us more, but most of the time, we have to lean on the faith He gave us and stop using wise men and horoscopes to find some meaning for where we are and what we are doing.
Today, you may have a dream, a large one or one that troubles you. Give it to God and trust Him for your future. There is a God-sized hole in every one of us, and you cannot fill it with this world, it will only be filled with Jesus. Put Him on like your clothes every day and wear the faith like a jacket. Today is the day, you no longer have to depend upon man but rather depend on, trust in, and lean on Jesus, the author and perfecter of your faith (Hebrews 12:2).
Prayer: Father, we all have dreams, and those dreams can haunt us or energize us. I pray that we use Your Word as our guide and lean on the direction of the Holy Spirit rather than anything man uses. I pray we would be bold enough to tell people that our direction in life comes from the Father and through the Word. I pray that we remove all the worldly directives and wisdom and replace them with Your Word and its wisdom. In Jesus’ name, amen.
