The Block of Wood

Isaiah 44:19

“No one stops to think, no one has the knowledge or understanding to say, “Half of it I used for fuel; I even baked bread over its coals, I roasted meat and I ate. Shall I make a detestable thing from what is left? Shall I bow down to a block of wood?”

When we peer into today’s culture in America, finding God can be a daunting task.  Outside on the many church billboards we see Sunday service times and outreach programs broadcasted. Pretend for a moment those were not there.  Could you still find God in everyday society?  It would be tough.

In Genesis, we read that we are made in the image of God, fashioned straight from His hands from the inside out.  Ingrained in all of us is a push to worship something.  We ultimately find that worshiping the one true God is the true fulfilling, soul fattening the Lord has designed us for.  But what about the ones we see everyday that seem to be, well, worshiping others things or being consumed by things other than God.

Yes, we all get busy but I am talking about the ones who are so enveloped in work, school, social life, politics or friendships that it seems as if they have created idols in these categories.  Being consumed and wholly devoted to the promotion, the grade, the higher social status, the right political arguments or friendships that God has no place.   I myself have sat back and wondered how some people can come up with and defend some really outlandish things. So much so that they have made defending their ideas and pushing their own narrative a worship service for upholding stupid ideas, it would seem as if they are not thinking at all.

In chapter 44 of Isaiah, the Lord is speaking to Israel.  He begins this portion of scripture telling us that someone goes and cuts some wood for fire and with that same wood, he burns it for warmth, cooks with it, uses it for shelter and also makes an idol to worship.  To this wooden idol verse 17 says, “He prays to it and says, “Save me! You are my god!”  Verse 18 wraps up what we see in today’s world, it says, “They know nothing, they understand nothing; their eyes are plastered over so they cannot see, and their minds closed so they cannot understand.”  Hence the title “The block of wood”.

Today, realize that the Lord God had made you for a purpose only He can fulfill.  You cannot find the closure you need in anything you get from this world.  In fact, the Lord says that it is even detestable to raise anything in this world to worship status.  Verse 20 reads where we all have to be at some point, “Is not this thing in my right hand a lie?” It would be wise not to elevate anything in this world to worship status over the one true God.  God gives us all of this to recognize His hand in all of it not to worship it.  The day you start recognizing that the Lord is the foundation of it all, is the day He will start downloading you your purpose.  Are you holding the block of wood closer than the Lord?

Prayer: Father, I ask for forgiveness that I have elevated the things of this world over you by making them an idol in my life. My job, my money, my social status, my family, my vehicle all of it needs to be submitted to you, Lord. I pray that I don’t let my heart become foolish and my mind lack understanding of you, Lord. Help me worship only you and help me to understand that all of your creation cries our your name. In Jesus name, amen.
