For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. Some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs.
My girls and wife love romance movies on the the Hallmark channel. All I see are those cheesy rom coms but they see much more. They get all caught up in the connection and the love being built between two star crossed lovers. Aside from some poor acting, the love between the two on the screen is plain to see. I have even truly enjoyed some of them but soon after I have to be snapped back to reality by a good kick n kill, a staple of entertainment for us men.
Listening to a sermon, God dropped a word on my heart about the love of money and as I pass it along to you all I hope helps you like it has helped me.
We all seem to need money for life. We are way past the barter and trade societies of the past. They still exist, just in small ways. Gone are the days where we can trade for our needs. We are most often stuck in the place where money is needed in order to eat, put gas in our tanks, invest, and so on.
Most of us, if asked, would say that we do not love money. The pitfalls of loving money are very apparent. All he ever does is work, he is obsessed with money, he or she needs the latest clothes, shoes, car, house, or kids that look like they have money. Most of us do carefully watch ourselves from slipping into the love of loving money. The truth is we may be falling into the love of money without even knowing it.
Have you ever seen a spouse or a girlfriend or boyfriend completely lose it when their significant other leaves. They fall apart and ask why. They go over the past looking for clues to what went wrong. They were in love with that other person and it shows. Here is what the Lord showed me; do you act like this when you have money problems? Wow, for me the answer is yes. I have not cried and wailed over things but it has consumed my being while I figure out what went wrong and even so much to say it affects the ones around me. Just as the end of the verse above says, “Some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs.”
Maybe the love of money has crept in and taken over you also. Instead of looking like you are in a romance with money your life looks like a break up with money. You are still in love with money and the way you handle the downs are a clue as to if you are in love with money or not. Philippians 4:19 says, “And my God will meet all your needs according to the riches of his glory in Christ Jesus.” 2 Corinthians 12:9 says, “But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore, I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me.”
If we believe these two verses then we should not act like money just broke up with us. Rather, we should boast in the grace of God and His power that rest in us while believing that He will be our provider. Today, do the money test. Have you fallen into love with money? Does it feel like a break up? Paul tells us to fix our eyes on the things above, not on the things of this world. What are you in love with?
Prayer: Father, our verse tells us to not fall in love with money. Help us use money like we use a tool from the garage. We pull it out and use it wisely for a certain purpose and not overuse or abuse it. I pray that we have our minds completely fixed on you and not our money. In Jesus name, amen.
