“So the is what the sovereign Lord says: “See, I lay a stone in Zion, a tested stone, a precious cornerstone for a sure foundation; the one who relies on it will never be stricken with panic.”
The definition of panic is: A sudden, overpowering feeling of fear, often affecting many people at once. Panic is crazy thing to watch. We can all think of a time when we were witnesses to someone in full panic mode. An overpowering feeling of fear. My wife was telling me a story of a young boy who was running and fell hitting his head. He instantly started to cry seeing blood coming from his head, but his brother out of fear, started to cry as well. His brother was not hurt at all, he was in a state of panic and fear where the worst possible situation plagued his mind. His brother was OK, just a small cut with a lot of blood.
1 Timothy 1:7 says, ” For God has not given us a spirit of fear and timidity, but of power, love, and self-discipline.” Paul is telling Timothy that the feeling of fear and panic are not from the Lord. Instead, the Lord has given us a spirit of power, love and self-discipline. If you find yourself in panic mode more than you want to be, then a good hard look at these verses might be in order. Isaiah is telling the Israelites that if they rely on the Lord they will never be stricken with panic.
I often like to outline characteristics and behaviors. The closer you get to the Lord by reading the Bible and standing on His promises, the less you will find yourself in panic mode. Panic is telling you that your foundation is weak and untrustworthy, but the Lord says that we should build our house on the rock and when the storms of life come it will not be washed away. (Matthew 7:24-27)
In 2020, the year of covid, many people were stricken with panic. So many people found themselves relying on the latest science or news that their panic had affected many people all at once. An old children’s hymn goes like this, “I can run through a troop and leap over a wall, Hallelujah.” (Psalms 18:29) With our current state of mind, you may not be feeling like conquering anything, but we do not have to live in panic. Covid did not deserve all the panic mustered up from the enemy. God is larger than covid and the panic it ensued was misguided and from the enemy.
You may not be in panic mode with something like covid. Maybe your panic is a job that just ended, or a relationship that is faltering. Maybe it is your past coming up where you would rather leave it, in the past. Or it could be those weak times you caved into temptation. Whatever the case my be, the Bible tells us in Romans 8:1-2, “Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus, 2 because through Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit who gives life has set you free from the law of sin and death.”
And also in Revelation 12:11 it tells us, “They triumphed over him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony;” You don’t have to panic over what the devil has reminded you of in your past. In Christ you don’t have to be stricken with panic. You are set free!
Prayer: Father, I rely on you and your promises. I put you and your Word as the cornerstone of my life. I refuse to be stricken with panic anymore! I have a God-given spirit of power, love and a sound mind. Your Word promises that we will overcome. Today I stand on those promises. I write them on my heart, Lord, so I can repeat them from my mouth when life challenges my resolve. In Jesus name, amen.
