“7And on this mountain He will destroy the covering that is [cast] over all peoples,
And the veil [of death] that is woven and spread over all the nations.
8 He will swallow up death [and abolish it] for all time.
And the Lord God will wipe away tears from all faces,
And He will take away the disgrace of His people from all the earth;
For the Lord has spoken.”
That famous day when Babe Ruth pointed to the western wall signifying an impending home run, someone in the crowd scoffed for sure. Others moved to the edge of their seats in anticipation, saying, “Something is about to happen!” History would record a towering homerun that Babe Ruth slammed over the western wall. How did he know he was going to do it? Did he just prophesy the homerun? Was that just an arrogant show of talent that fate seemed to capitalize? No one knows for sure, but we all know that the Babe went into baseball history holding the homerun record for decades.
I love the Bible because it cross references itself so many times. Here, Isaiah is prophesying what the Lord is telling him. The forward reference is to Christ. That mountain in verse 7 is the hill called Golgotha in which our Lord was crucified. The veil of death that is woven and spread over all the nations refers to the sin that separates every human from God.
Remember in the garden of Eden before the Adam and Eve sinned, God walked with Adam in the cool of the day. He was present with His creation and close to them because Adam and Eve have not sinned. After the sin, Adam and Eve all of the sudden had a self awareness problem. They suddenly realized they were separated from God and a sin nature fell on them. They tried to cover it with fig leaves but this would not do because they still hid from God. That veil that was spread over all the nations was this sin nature.
Verse 8 starts with the fact that He will swallow up death and abolish it for all time. How is God going to do this? Welcome to our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. He was the perfect sacrifice for all mankind once and for all. No need to do it again or over and over. Jesus Christ was the atonement for all of our sins, for the sins of all who have fallen and all who have not even been born yet. If you have not met this Jesus, He wants to meet with you. That forever sin nature ushered in by Adam has been broken by Jesus and His sacrifice. All you have to do is accept Him as your Lord and savior understanding the fact that you need Him and will pledge to follow Him. You don’t have to go on some one year pilgrimage or be dedicated to be a priest for the rest of your life. You don’t even have to clean up your life at all. Nope, if you will only turn and follow Christ you life will be fixed by Him. Isaiah calls it “remove his people’s disgrace from all the earth”.
Isaiah here prophesies Jesus centuries before Jesus was born. Earlier in the chapter, Isaiah prophesies that God has been a refuge for the poor, a refuge from the needy in their distress, a shelter from the storm, and shade from the heat. Just like CeCe Winans proclaims in one of her songs, “That’s my God!”
One final point, at the end of this verse Isaiah writes down, “The Lord has spoken.” Just like Babe Ruth pointing to the western wall your words are powerful. Today, start to proclaim from your own lips what the Lord thinks about your problems and issues instead of speaking how large they are. In Genesis, the Word tells us that He spoke and created the earth and everything in it. Satan has never created squat! He is a liar and and thief only. Don’t buy into the lie of his power because Jesus paid the price for you. If you accept Him as your savoir by faith then your name is written in Lambs book of life. That puts every demon in hell on notice that you just accepted Jesus and His power and dominion rest inside of you through the Holy Spirit. Step into the fulfillment of this prophesy today by being in the army of God that storms the gates of hell and takes back what the enemy has stolen.
Prayer: Father help us to understand the power and authority we have in Christ. Help us to use it and stomp the devil to the ground in Jesus name, amen.
