Finding God

Song of Songs 3:1

“All night long on my bed I looked for the one my heart loves; I looked for him but did not find him.”

Have you ever lost something so valuable that you turned the house upside down trying to find it?  A modern example is your phone.  All ready to go and, where is my phone?  We have all done it.  Everything stops while your epic quest to find your phone begins.  Worry and fear fills your heart as you ponder the what if’s.  What if I really did lose it?

Sadly, we pay more attention to where our phone is than where God is in our lives. In the verse above, the woman, representing the church of God, finds herself alone in the bed.  Some of us believe we will live on the mountain tops of life if we find God and somehow avoid the valleys.  The truth is that we walk through both hilltop experiences and valleys of death.  The Lord will be there for both but action is needed on our part.

In verse 2 the woman, after realizing the husband is not in their bed says, “I will get up now and go about the city,”  The actions we take to find God are very important.  The Bible says that faith without works is dead.  Is your faith dead?  Have you been walking by faith or have you quit because you chose to walk by sight?  Philippians 2:12 tells us, ” Therefore, my dear friends, as you have always obeyed—not only in my presence, but now much more in my absence—continue to work out your salvation with fear and trembling.”  You have to work it out.

Times will come when you wake up and not feel the good Lord near you.  Your task at this point is to “get up!”  Pick up your Bible, read the living Word of God, pray, sing, listen to sermons, listen to worship music….actively seek the presence of the Lord.  Walk by faith and not by sight.  Your issues are little tests.  Your job is to find God in the middle of them, see what He says about them and move forward on the promises of the Lord.  When you find those nuggets of wisdom from the Lord, do what the woman does in verse 4, “I held him and would not let him go”.

Prayer: Father, help us to get up and actively seek you every minute of every day. Don’t let us sit back and slumber Lord but quicken our body to speak our faith in you all throughout every day. Help us to take captive every thought and hold it. I pray that we only seek you in our hearts, minds, and strength speaking our faith every chance we get. In Jesus name, amen.
