“Then David got up from the ground. After he has washed, put on lotion and changed his clothes, he went to the house of the Lord and worshiped.”
Losses are a part of life and we have all been there. Whether it is a loss of a loved one, a loss of a job, or even a loss of a close relationship such as a spouse or a friendship. Once this happens, the grieving process begins. It starts with shock and denial that the event even happened. Then we see ourselves go through a range of emotions including anger, sadness, and in some cases even depression. Finally, the last stage of the grieving process is acceptance.
In this chapter, David is confronted by Nathan the profit about his midnight rendezvous with Bathsheba and how he handled it. The Lord told David that the child that was born to Bathsheba will die because of David’s actions and some other things will happen to his life that will be very public to contrast the private nature of his sin. David fasted and prayed all day and all night for seven days. He does not eat anything to the point that his servants are worried about him but he still refuses to eat or be comforted. The child dies and when David finds out about it, he does something we should all practice. He washed up, cleaned up, went to the house of the Lord and worshiped.
In our society, we often see people after a tragic loss or a bad event in life, blame God, and get mad. While the blaming is going on, they find other people to chat with about it and re-live how mad, broken, and bitter they are. Maybe you can relate to one of these people? You are frustrated about the current set of events in your life and bitterness is creeping in and setting up its root in your life.
From my own experience, I can tell you that going to the place of worship and praising God is the first act of moving on from your circumstances. Clean yourself up and go worship for in it you will find healing and the strength to move forward. When David was asked about his actions, he simply acknowledged that God has ultimate control and he might have changed his mind; but he did not.
How do you act when God says “No” to your prayers? David got up and started moving forward without being bitter and angry. He and Bathsheba have another child and David goes off to win another city. He let the past go into God’s hands and kept moving forward. God has many things for you do, but you still may be stuck in sackcloth and ashes over a bad event or something that went wrong. Your first step is to get up, clean up, go the house of the Lord, and worship.
Prayer: Father, we have all been guilty of harboring our anger and frustration over things we should have let go. Today, help us to get up, clean up, go to the house of Lord, and give our past, no matter how damaging it may have been, to you Lord. Just as David chose to give it to the Lord, help us turn over control to you Father and trust in your plan for our lives while we release our grip off our circumstances. Increase our faith Father. Help us to realize that you are in control and that we walk be faith and not by sight. Satan, we bind and rebuke you and cast you out of our lives. The Bible says that we are new creations in Christ, old things are cast away and all things are new. We will accept that truth, get up, and follow you despite our feelings. In Jesus name, amen.
