Whose Son Is That?

1 Samuel 17:55

“As Saul watched David going out to meet the Philistine, he said to Abner, commander of the army, “Abner, whose son is that young man?”

This is one of the most famous stories of all time.  You can go into any place and ask if they have heard of David and Goliath and most of the time you will get a “yes”.  Everyone loves a great story where the little guy wins the day and big bad enemy is defeated.

David’s declaration to Goliath makes it clear that he was not relying on his sling shot to defeat Goliath.  He states in verse 45 that “you come against me with a sword and spear and javelin, but I come against you in the name of the Lord Almighty, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied.”  David was a snot nose kid according to his oldest brother. When he finds David asking about Goliath earlier in the chapter he ridicules him and asks him “Why have you even come down here?  And with whom did you leave those few sheep in the wilderness?”  Needless to say that David was not the favored brother or the favored one to fight Goliath that day.  A 17-year-old boy shows up to the battlefield with bread and cheese, gets ridiculed by his brothers and is told to shut up and go home where boys live.

One of the commanders overhears this family squabble and reports it to Saul.  Saul then agrees to let the boy go and try to defeat Goliath knowing full well the real battle may begin at any moment and this boy is expendable, but on a day like today, he just might be good entertainment.

Maybe you feel kind of like David.  No one seems to give you the time of day or your own family seems distant and irritated by your very presence.  David just kept on going down the path laid out before him.  At the end of that path was huge fight using inferior weapons against a larger that life opponent.  David declares that the battle is the Lord’s, because he remembered the past battles that the Lord gave him victory over.

Medical histories would like to play Goliath as having a condition that would let him grow larger than normal people while having weaknesses with this defect.  But on the outside, Goliath was a champion with great fighting ability and a lot of kick butt inside of him.  Similarly, the battles you may be facing don’t look like a weakened defective foe, they are mean, ugly, and may have championed over you for a long time.

Today, pray what David said to Goliath.  Tell your issue as well as Satan and his demons, that you are coming against them not with a sword or spear or any other thing that this world says you need to fight your issue with.  You are coming against this in the name of the Lord. Walk in victory with the blood shed on the cross and the promises of the Word of God.  Your issue does not have to define you any longer.  God used the most unlikely person to defeat Goliath with most unlikely weapons but David first declared that the Lord was fighting his battle.  Who is fighting your battles?

Prayer: Lord, I thank you that you see me even when I am unseen, over looked, counted out, and treated unfairly. Just like David, I choose to focus on your Word and your promises instead of the overwhelming issues of life. I walk today with my head held high claiming the victory I have in Christ. I will be confident in you. In Jesus name, amen.
