Below are a few verses on keeping silent and a short devotional to follow.
In the multitude of words sin is not lacking,
But he who restrains his lips is wise.
(Prov. 10:19 NKJV)
The prudent keep their knowledge to themselves,
but a fool’s heart blurts out folly.
(Prov. 12:23 NIV)
The one who guards his mouth preserves his life;
The one who opens wide his lips comes to ruin.
(Prov. 13:3 NASB)
Even fools are thought wise if they keep silent,
and discerning if they hold their tongues.
(Prov. 17:28 NIV)
He who answers a matter before he hears the facts—it is folly and shame to him.
(Prov. 18:13 AMP)
Whoever guards his mouth and tongue
Keeps his soul from troubles.
(Prov. 21:23 NKJV)
Often times we are ready to speak our mind, get it out, verbally throw up what is on the tip of our tongues. There are times to do just that but in the manner of being wise, above are a few verses from Proverbs dealing with holding our tongue. Today turn these into a prayer to God.
Put your name in the start of the verse and ask God to help you in this area. I can assure your we have all inserted our own foot in our mouths time and time again. Try speaking less and listening more, humbling yourself by guarding your speech. Silence is often your greatest weapon in not looking like a fool.
Satan would love it if you just spoke your mind on all kinds of topics but that is the opposite of what wisdom will teach you. Satan would also love it if you gave your two cents without hearing all the facts. Lawyers never ask a question they don’t know the answer to already. Today, rather than engaging your mouth, engage your mind and use these verses to guide your speech. My favorite is Proverbs 17:28 which says, “Even fools are thought wise if they keep silent and discerning if they hold their tongues.”
