“Many seek an audience with a ruler, but it is from the Lord that one gets justice.”
In today’s world of political views, gender views, and so much more, it is easy to get caught up in idle chatter that benefits no one and offends some. We are all too quick to let someone know our understanding of a certain situation, and sometimes we don’t think about whether our opinion or viewpoint needs to be heard at all. Proverbs 29:20 tells us, “Do you see someone who speaks in haste? There is more hope for a fool than for them.”
We all need to practice shutting our mouths and watching our actions more than defending the current viewpoints of today’s upside-down world. Solomon warns us in verse 26 that when we are quick to share our opinion or tell someone our viewpoint, we forget that the Lord may have something different He wants us to say or do.
In fact, we forget that it is from the Lord that we get justice or seek righteousness, not from political pundits or the news. I challenge all of you to seek the truth of the Word of God concerning any subject and ask the Lord to open your eyes on that subject. Do this before you go into a conversation half-cocked. Nothing feels worse than taking a stand on one side or the other of a touchy subject and getting blasted by different facts delivered with anger. It leaves you feeling shot or wounded. No, the Bible says that if you know the truth, the truth will set you free.
Free from what you might say or free from relying on others’ opinions. Instead, first, getting a real understanding from the Bible, written by the One who fashioned and made you in His likeness, God!
Today, seek the Lord first before going into a battle of words with an audience you might not want to tangle with. Know what you believe, defend the truth, know the truth, believe the truth. Gain a greater understanding of topics with the Bible as your guide. Winning an argument is foolish; rather, show the love of the Lord and believe the truth. They say you catch more flies with honey than vinegar. So start using the honey from the Word of God, and you will be amazed at how many worldly flies you catch and how many opportunities you get to share Jesus with someone.
Prayer: Father, help us to keep our runaway mouths shut. Help us to study what Your Word says about everything. I pray that when I do open my mouth, it will be filled with Your love, grace, and truth, in Jesus’ name, amen.
