“I went past the field of a sluggard, past the vineyard of someone who has no sense; thorns had come up everywhere, the ground was covered with weeds, and the stone wall was in ruins.”
If you don’t think the sluggard and the one with no sense don’t own property, then look around. We have plenty of people who own a lot of stuff that fits the category. The Lord directed me to two things in this passage: the thorns and the weeds. Everyone starts out with a fresh, clean slate for life. Somewhere down the line, that person has to own up to his or her own life property. We are but a collection of our own choices.
God has made us in His image, which means we all yearn for God from the inside out, even if you don’t know it yet. So our field, or vineyard of life, has a good thing going for it, an honest desire to get close to God. I have done plenty of yard work in my life, and one thing I know is that thorns and weeds are not welcome. They are ugly to look at and cover up the good grass or garden plants that should be growing and being shown off to passersby. After you remove them, the good plants can thrive, but if you refuse to remove them, the weeds will take over and choke out the grass and other plants.
The sluggard and the one with no sense have lives filled with these weeds and thorns, choking out the good stuff that should be flourishing. Removing the weeds and thorns is an everyday job if you have ever kept up with a lawn or garden. They don’t stay clean of weeds on their own; you have to pull them up regularly. Keeping your life clean is an everyday matter. You cannot expect to flourish in the good things God has for you and neglect getting close to Him every day. Your life will soon be overrun with thorns and weeds, and you will no longer be able to find any godly aspect of your life; it will have been choked out by the weeds.
A sluggard is lazy, while the one with no sense refuses knowledge. Today, make a choice to be an active Christian. Begin to pray to God and read the Bible regularly. Make a choice to gain understanding of the Bible and become a student of God’s ways, refusing the world’s understanding of life. If I have a problem with the dryer, which we had, I would never call a boat mechanic to fix it. No, I would call someone trained to fix a dryer, an expert to get the job done right. God made you and fashioned you in His image; it is high time to call on Him to repair your life and stop asking the world to fix what only God can perfect.
Prayer: Father, help us to be lifelong learners of the Bible. Help us to dive into Your Word every day and meditate on it day and night. I pray that the desire to be an active Christian will overwhelm any other desire in my daily walk with You. In Jesus’ name, amen.
