” As a ring of gold in a swine’s snout, so is a beautiful woman who is without discretion [her lack of character mocks her beauty].”
There was a man who owned a hair salon in a town. He was doing great, cutting and styling hair for all the people. A big company moved across the street and started advertising everything for $6, haircuts, perms, styling, everything. The owner started to lose business. One day, he put a sign in his front window reading, “WE FIX $6 HAIRCUTS.”
If the world has given you a $6 haircut, Jesus can fix that. Think about that. This came from the radio, from Steve Brown, a deep-voiced radio host who spreads God’s Word with a quick story. This is one of my favorites.
Our verse today has something to do with beauty, misplaced beauty. Just like the $6 haircut may have to be fixed by a real stylist, we often put too much value on the cheap things the world gives us, only to miss what God has for us. Just like a beautiful woman who lacks character, her outer beauty is just skin deep; she might as well be a pig with a gold ring in its snout.
Jesus is the answer to all of your questions. He can fix what the world dishes out. Dressing up a pig may seem funny to us, but it is what we do when we adorn ourselves with the world and its evils. Instead of putting on the world, put on Christ, the author and finisher of your faith. Are you tired of looking at your $6 haircut? Get it fixed with Jesus.
Prayer: Father, I take off and throw away all the worldly things I have adorned myself with and cast them at Your feet. I pray that my character matches the faith I have in You, Lord. I know we need things in this world, but I pray that those things never become more important than You, Lord. In Jesus’ name, amen.
