“I saw among the simple, I noticed among the young men, a youth who had no sense.”
From a father’s point of view, it all starts here: no sense. Solomon writes about a young man he noticed who had no sense and got trapped by an adulterous woman. This young man had no idea of the trap the woman was setting just for him. Entering the scene, strolling down the path to her trap, he moves on, not knowing what he is walking into, no sense. Verse 23 reveals that this trap could cost him his life, and in verse 27 Solomon ends with the phrase, “Her house is a highway to the grave.”
This chapter is caught up somewhat in gender differences, but Solomon does point out how the young man found himself in such a life-or-death situation that he had no sense. The other, most revealing fact is that he was young. Young and having no sense are a dangerous combination. The older you get, the wiser you should become.
If you are growing in Christ, you should be producing the fruit of the Spirit: love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, and faithfulness. If your garden of life is not producing those things, it should be a wake-up call. Just like the young man who was in the wrong place with no sense, you could find yourself in a trap that could cost you dearly.
This same young man, who is going to be trapped by the adulterous woman, proceeds to listen to her persuasive words and is seduced by her smooth talk. Can I say that Satan will not reveal himself as all bad or as the wrong thing to do? He will be persuasive and smooth, and it will sound like a good thing to do when, in reality, it will be leading you down a highway to the grave.
As women, this chapter may not seem that important, but it does reveal how and when Satan will attack. It starts with being young or not having the truth of God within you, and is compounded by your lack of sense. Solomon starts this chapter out with a command: “Write them on the tablet of your heart.” Being young is not a crime; having no sense is the reason you end up in dumb situations.
Verse 10 says that the woman came out to meet him. You can count on temptation, in any form, coming out to meet you, no matter where you are. When you see temptation, the Bible says to run from it and get away as soon as possible. Make it a point not to find yourself alone with foolish people who will ask you to be a part of foolishness. Keep the commands of the Lord, and you will live.
Prayer: Father, help us to always understand that sin may be crouching at the door waiting for us. We have been given the same power Jesus had, and the Holy Spirit should be our guide. I pray that we exercise the authority we have in Jesus and walk away from all forms of temptation, mastering it and becoming more righteous, walking by faith every day. In Jesus’ name, amen.
