“And again David asked the Lord what to do.”
In sports, there is something called a halftime adjustment. It’s when the coach studies what happened in the first half and makes strategic changes for the second. What worked before does not automatically work now. The momentum shifts, the opponent adjusts, and the entire flow of the game changes.
This is exactly what happened to David in 2 Samuel 5. He had already defeated the Philistines once. God gave him the strategy, and he won. But when the same enemy came back, David did not assume he knew what to do. He asked the Lord again. It was the same battle but with different instructions.
That is what walking with God looks like for us, too. In Matthew 6:33, Jesus says, “Seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.” Before you take a step today, be like David and seek the Lord. It may feel awkward or even counterintuitive, but His ways will always lead you in the right direction. He knows the right people to place in your life and the ones to remove. He knows the right career path. He even knows the things you think will make you happy in the moment, but would eventually leave you feeling guilt or regret. Before it gets that far, pause and seek the Lord. He knows best.
Sometimes I find myself getting ahead of God. I think ten moves ahead, build scenarios in my mind, and then feel anxious trying to control what has not even happened yet. But we are not meant to live weekly, monthly, or yearly. When Jesus taught us to pray, he said, “Give us this day our daily bread.” (Matthew 6:11) It is a daily walk and a daily surrender to Jesus.
Prayer:
Lord, help me slow down and seek you before making decisions. Teach me to trust you day by day and not get ahead of your leading. Give me this day my daily bread, fill me with your Holy Spirit, and guide every step I take. In Jesus’ name, amen.
