“…all your heart…..your own understanding…..all your ways….your paths.”
Our five senses are the beginning point of much of our lives. If you think about it, without them, we would look like robots, having been programmed by something else. In fact, the new push is to somehow get our five senses into computer form and have a program or software operate as if it had one or all of our five senses. That will never happen, simply because computers are made by humans, and humans are made by God.
When God tells us in Proverbs to trust in the Lord with all your… (see above), it starts with your five senses. Starting with your sense of sight: in order for you to commit your sense of sight to the Lord, let us commit to keeping what we see in line with our Christian values. We can go on forever describing what our eyes see, but the bottom line is, would Jesus agree with what you are seeing?
Your sense of taste deals mainly with what you eat or drink. Committing your taste to the Lord means not allowing abusive things to enter your body, period!
Your sense of touch is solely dedicated to what you touch. Whatever you find yourself holding should line up with the Word of God, meaning no coveting someone else’s belongings, etc. That means no illegal behavior, passing things, or touching things outside of what is pleasing to the Lord.
Your sense of smell has a direct link to what you put in your mouth. Make sure you are smelling good things and stay away from bad ones; if you get close to something that smells bad, you might just touch it or eat it, or both. If it smells bad, stay away!
Your sense of sound is linked to what goes into your mind. Don’t be fooled into thinking that listening only to songs about cheating or abuse won’t affect you. The Bible says that we should praise the Lord at all times, and His praises shall continually be on our lips. What you hear affects your behavior, period.
The Lord wants to make your paths straight, but you may be getting in the way by letting your five senses be ruled by ungodly things, thus driving you far from the Lord. Every day life should begin by snapping your five senses into alignment with the Lord. Get up and praise the Lord for life, bless your food, listen to praise music (at least a little), get around godly people who give you godly wisdom, and spend some time reading the Word of God. Make your five senses line up with the Word, and see how God will start to direct your path and make it straight.
Prayer: Father, help us to align our five senses with Your Word. I pray that I get to know You better as I decide every day to follow the Lord with all my heart, mind, soul, and strength. In Jesus’ name, amen.
