Great Work, Wrong Assignment

Psalm 118:8

“It is better to take refuge in the Lord than to trust in humans.”

Tony Evans tells a story about a paper he wrote while he was in seminary. He said he poured everything he had into this assignment and turned it in. He waited to see his grade, and to his amazement, it was an F. Below the F were the words, “Great paper.” Below that was written, “Wrong assignment.”

We can work as hard as we can on something and still have it all go south. Many of us can relate to this because we have worked and worked on a relationship, an assignment, or a friendship, and we see no progress. In fact, things just get worse. You can walk plowed fields all day long, but that does not make you a farmer. You can live in a garage, and that will not make you a mechanic.

It is better to take refuge in the Lord than to trust in humans. Some of us take too much of our own advice and do not listen to the Lord. We could be the worst of our own issues. David goes on to say that it is better to trust in the Lord than to listen to princes. In other words, the government may not be the best source of advice either.

To start off on the right foot, we need to stop just “visiting church.” We need to meet with the Lord every day and understand He wants to talk with you as much as you want to listen. A relationship will never grow if the only time you meet is once a week for an hour.

Take the Lord on a date every day and read His Word. Get to know the character of the Lord by reading what He did with His people in the Bible. The Bible is the living Word of God. The Holy Spirit will quicken your mind, bring out the Word, and make it apply to your life.

Also, to fly with the saints, so to speak, you have to be baptized in the Holy Spirit. All the disciples sat in a room, scared for their lives. When they were baptized by the Holy Spirit, thousands were added to the kingdom because the Holy Spirit of God was with them.

Two things today. First, get to know God by reading His Word and praying. Second, get baptized in the Holy Spirit. It will put jet rockets on your life for God.

Prayer: Father, help us never to take full stock in our human nature. Help us to never completely shut You out of our decision tree. In fact, help us put You and Your Word at the top of our decision tree. I pray we are grounded in the Word and stand on Your promises daily. In Jesus’ name, amen.
