“But they soon forgot what he had done and did not wait for his plan to unfold.”
We all watched the movie Up. The one line we repeat often is when the dog is talking to the old man and suddenly looks away and says, “SQUIRREL!” I can’t tell you how many times we have used this phrase when someone we are talking to is suddenly distracted.
The truth is we all get there, the place where our focus is weak and the ability to stay the course is taken over by momentary distractions. It often happens when we are left to our own devices. No one around to push us, no deadline to meet, no assignment to turn in. Our minds go from focus to wandering, and where we end up sometimes is scary. “A little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to rest, and poverty will come on you like a thief and scarcity like an armed man” (Proverbs 24:33–34).
If anything, the Lord wants us to focus. The Israelites were the poster child of distraction. We can read about all the grumbling and complaining they did in the wilderness. God was not happy with all that, and if it were not for Moses and a few others who stood in the gap for the Israelites, we might be reading a very different history story.
You see, God’s mercy and grace were enough for the Israelites in the end. They did enter into the promised land, they just took the long way because of distractions and taking their focus off of the Lord and onto the issues around them. The Lord has a plan for your life, and believe it or not, it is moving along and the dots are being connected even though you don’t see it.
Today, let’s stay focused and pursue God every day. It starts with a simple good morning, Lord, and a little prayer. Pick up your favorite devotional and take 15 minutes to read it. Pray that the Lord will burn the truth of God onto the tablet of your heart. God does have a plan, and it is being worked out. You may be choosing the long way because of your wandering nature, but God is good, and He will always set you on the right path if you refocus your efforts on the Lord every day.
Prayer: Father, help us to keep our focus on You even if we do not see any changes. I pray that we have Your peace in the middle of things when nothing is happening, knowing that You have answered our prayers and are working it all out. In Jesus’ name, amen.
