Where Are You Sheltering?

Psalm 91:1

“He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High will abide in the shadow of the Almighty.”

With winter storms, I am reminded how precious shelter is. Going outside in the cold is not a big deal; people do it all the time. In fact, many make their living outside. They have special clothes to protect them from the elements. After a long, hard day outside, it is always nice to go inside and take a load off, shelter, if you will.

The most important part of their day could be said to be that they have a home to go to and sleep in, safe and sound. They say home is where the heart is, and they are right. Think for a second in terms of Christianity. We “shelter” on Sunday and maybe even every morning while having our daily devotional, but we all have to go to work. We close the Bible and leave the house to go to work, for a lot of us. Just like the elements outside that may get to the worker who makes a living outdoors, sin can wait at the door, and it is seeking a chance to attack. The Lord warned Cain about the sin at his door seeking to devour him, but the Lord told him that he must master it or overcome it. Cain did not master the sin but let the sin overcome him, and he killed his brother Abel.

If we are not careful, the elements of the world can get to us and turn us into a “Cain,” one who disregards the direction from the Lord. We all need to bundle up if we go outside, but somehow the cold will penetrate our jackets, gloves, and boots, and we have to come in out of the cold. Dwell in the shelter of the Most High and abide in the shadow of the Almighty, and you will be able to shake the sin off or master it, as the Lord told Cain.

You can master sin with the help of the Lord, and it starts with where you are dwelling spiritually. When you get up, make sure you get some Bible for breakfast and maybe some praise music along with that. We cannot take away the elements outside our homes. We must prepare to overcome them. We cannot take sin away, it is sewn into the fabric of the world, but we can prepare to overcome it and master it. It starts with where you “shelter” and whose “shadow” you hang around. Make it a point to let God move into your everyday life. Do not just visit Him during obligatory Sundays. Dwell with Him and hang out in His shadow.

Prayer: Father, this world is full of sin and ungodliness. I pray we shelter in Your presence every morning, and in doing so, I know we will be able to master sin in whatever form it takes, in Jesus’ name, amen.
