A Generous Giver

Psalm 37:21

“The wicked borrow and do not repay, but the righteous give generously.”

The definition of generous is, “(of a person) showing a readiness to give more of something, such as money or time, than is strictly necessary or expected.”

In this Christmas season, we all exchange gifts. We look forward to seeing family, getting some rest, and taking a much-needed break from school and work. We all know generous people. They are the ones who match the definition above; they seem to give of themselves more than is necessary or expected.

You see, if you only give what is expected or necessary, then you are not generous. What you have given of your time or money, or both, seems to be classified more as a tax rather than something that is labeled generous. Your gift, in your eyes, is generous because you gave, but is it really generous? Did you give of yourself more than expected, or was it just enough to satisfy expectations?

The Bible says that non-believers will know us by our love, our generous love, the love that is more than expected or necessary. “More than expected or necessary” should be the phrase attached to our lives as Christians. John 3:16 says that God so loved the world that He gave His only Son to die on a cross so that we would not perish but have eternal life with Him, generous giving for sure.

In this Christmas season, being generous givers aligns us with being righteous. You do not have to have a large bank account to be generous. Give your time, love, patience, prayers, help, encouraging words, and so on. In other words, be intent on being more than expected or necessary with yourselves. When you do, watch the love of God melt someone’s heart of stone. That is the true reason for Christmas.

Prayer: Father, help us to be generous givers. Help us to give beyond what is necessary or expected in this Christmas season. In Jesus’ name, amen.
