“But the eyes of the Lord are on those who fear him, on those whose hope is in his unfailing love,”
As I turned the key, my hope was that the engine would start up and stay running. Many times I would turn the key and nothing happened. Some of those times, even though I turned the key, the engine would make a grumbling sound but it would not start. I was in the car, I was buckled in, I had the keys, I had my driver’s license, I had a place to go, all the things I could do to prepare for my journey I had accounted for. The one thing that was supposed to complete the setup process, the started engine, sometimes did not happen. I had all the steps necessary for everything to move forward and yes, my hope was that the engine would start.
We often go through a checklist of action items as Christians. We go to church, check, we pray sometimes, check, we read our Bible, check, and we even spend some time in small group with people we don’t like, check. As the list goes, you would have all steps covered. The Israelites did that a lot.
When Jesus was preaching, he told the religious leaders that they were a brood of vipers. Yes, the same people who had all the boxes checked and rechecked every day. Jesus said that they will know you by your love, not by how many boxes you religiously checked off.
Put your hope in the Lord’s unfailing love. Reflect on how he gave his son for you and me so that we could be in heaven with him. You may feel like checking the boxes makes you a better Christian, but all it does is rob your focus. Unfailing love is what we should put our hope in. “A horse is a vain hope for deliverance; despite all of its great strength it cannot save.” What are you putting your hope in?
Prayer: Father, help us to always put our hope in you. I pray that we go throughout every day finding you in every detail of life. I pray that we seek a relationship with you and not a checklist of things. In Jesus’ name, amen.
