“Be strong and take heart, all you who hope in the Lord.”
As a young boy, I often dreamed about tree houses and building forts to play in. When we were old enough, Chuck and I went to building things; forts, trash carts, fences, walls, and yes, tree houses. We had a mulberry tree near the barn, and that summer we built a great tree house in that tree. It took a while and lots of nails. I will bet it is still there today. The most important part of the tree house was the foundation boards. Just like in the Treehouse Masters show, we set large 2 x 6 boards up in the tree and anchored them to the tree with huge nails so they would not come loose and so they would be stable to build upon. Without those support boards the tree house would not be safe. Being up in the tree was a little scary. We would climb up and secure the boards to the tree with nails, and slowly but surely the foundation was built. Being in the tree now was not so scary.
The Lord should be our foundation. As you grow in the Lord, it gets easier to stand on your faith. Just like the foundation boards of the tree house, your faith in the Lord has to be strong and immovable. Jesus told a story of a man who built his house upon the sand, and rains came and washed the house away. Likewise, a man who built his house upon the rock, and when the rains came the house did not move because it was built upon a solid foundation. We have all seen houses and buildings fall because of weak foundations. Those foundations were good enough until they failed and the building came crashing down.
Put your hope and trust in the Lord, the solid foundation, and when the rains and trials come you will not be shaken, the Bible says. You will have to be strong and full of courage, immovable in your faith, before you pass the test. You see, both houses are great when the sun is shining and it is not raining. It is only when the rain comes and trials rise up that our faith is tested. If you are in the middle of a tough place in life, it may be a test.
Pray Psalm 31:24, “I will be strong and take heart because my hope is in you, Lord!” We had tons of fun in that old tree house, in part because we did not worry about the foundation. Put your hope in the Lord, and if you do, the last thing you should worry about is the foundation.
Prayer: Father, help us to rest in you as our foundation. Help us to read the Bible and let those promises sink into our hearts so we will be immovable when trials of life come our way. In Jesus’ name, amen.
