Free From the Snare

Psalm 25:15

“My eyes are ever on the Lord, for only he will release my feet from the snare.”

The definition of a snare is as follows: “a trap for catching birds or animals, typically one having a noose of wire or cord.”

In today’s world of videos and social media, scrolling through, you can find just about anything you desire. Facebook runs algorithms that feed you more of the same types of things you pause on or click on. Well, I paused to see a mountain lion trapped in a snare set by a hunter. This mountain lion was quietly resting until someone came from out of frame and moved closer to the cat. The cat went bananas and started growling and moving around, trying to get out of the snare, and it was clear that the cat was helpless and needed the assistance of the person to free him from this trap. A cautious game of pinning the cat down ensued. This brave person finally released the cat from the snare and it bounded off into the forest. The cool thing about the video was seeing someone try to trap the already snared cat in order to release it. Dangerous stuff I do not think I could have done.

The cat did not purposely get into the snare, it was a trap. The whole idea of the trap is that it is hidden from plain sight. Once the cat was in the snare, it was clear that he was not going to get out without help. We can get into snares in our lives. Those snares are hidden from our eyesight but it becomes very clear when we are in one, trapped, and without help we will not get out.

The cat flailed about trying to get out, and every time he tried vigorously, the cord snaring him just dug in deeper or he entangled himself even worse than before. We have all been there as well, in our own efforts attempting to get out of the tight spot we are in, but every time we try we are confronted with the fact that we just dug the hole a little deeper and we are no closer to getting out.

Verse 15 outlines the snare protocol if you will; call on the Lord for help. Sounds simple right, it is. Just think, if the cat would have acted calm and let the man untangle him and release the snare, it would have been over quickly. Simply submitting to the Lord in all your ways can read simple, but it involves a decision to actively pray and see what God says about it rather than keep trying to be a hero on your own.

Today, release your control of the situation that has you snared. Buckle down and do it God’s way, and if you do not know what He says about it, open your Bible and read all the promises He gives us. Do not let your life end up on a reality TV show letting other people watch you unsuccessfully attempting to remove the snares of life, just give it to the Lord.

Prayer: Father, I pray that we would be reminded of Your awesome power over everything from death to life. I pray that we would lean not on our own strength but allow You to fight our battles while the Holy Spirit gives us direction in the middle of the fight. In Jesus’ name, amen.
