A song for pilgrims ascending to Jerusalem. A psalm of David.
1 Lord, my heart is not proud;
my eyes are not haughty.
I don’t concern myself with matters too great
or too awesome for me to grasp.
2 Instead, I have calmed and quieted myself,
like a weaned child who no longer cries for its mother’s milk.
Yes, like a weaned child is my soul within me.
3 O Israel, put your hope in the Lord—
now and always.
The bottle was like the holy grail of the nighttime. It would seem like things were going south and then the bottle would appear and all was well in the land. Every night we would rock our girls to sleep when they were young and the bottle was a big part of that routine. Over time the bottle had to go and was replaced by a good night sip and then off to brush their teeth. The bottle always calmed and quieted the girls in those early years.
God calls all of us to something greater than we can see. We pray to Him because the word of God says that prayer changes the heart of God. But how often have we calmed and quieted ourselves?
The world can be like the bottle. When we are young in Christ we hunger to hear and understand everything about the Lord. As time goes on the world seems to pull us back from the Lord. The girls did not give up the bottle overnight, it was a weaning process. We, the parents, understood that the bottle had to go and be replaced with something more grown up, like a cup.
Growing in the Lord is a process, it is called sanctification. He wants you to understand that you have to be weaned from the world. Bigger and better things wait for you when you choose to put your trust in the Lord and not the world.
The bottle was great when the girls did not have any teeth, but once their teeth came in, using the bottle could cause them to grow in abnormal ways. You will grow in abnormal ways when you grow apart from the Lord. I can say that all my girls have successfully quit the baby bottle and grown up now using grown up cups.
Commit to the process of weaning your mind and heart off the world and start trusting the Lord. Today, the Lord wants you to commit to Him and stop going back to the world. He wants to grow you up so that He can use you for His glory, and it starts with weaning yourself off the world and calming and quieting yourself. Do not concern yourself with great matters that you cannot change. Focus on the Lord.
Prayer: Father, help us to quiet ourselves. I pray that we do not concern ourselves with matters too great to understand or grasp. I pray that we trust in the Lord and lean not on our own understanding. In Jesus’ name, amen.
