Your Morning Coffee

Psalm 143:8

“Let me hear of your unfailing love each morning,
    for I am trusting you.
Show me where to walk,
for I give myself to you.”

Most people start out their morning routine with a cup of coffee. I have been doing that for a long time. As a kid, my parents did not drink coffee. I was introduced to this black liquid in college while working as a research assistant. Just by the title I held, you can tell I needed some help staying awake during those long afternoons after class while on the job. It started out with a little coffee and flavored French vanilla cream. Over time, it has progressed into pure black coffee, nothing but straight, strong-brewed goodness from the pot to my cup to enjoy.

The other morning routine is reading my Bible. I have read through the Bible a number of times over the years with the One Year Bible and the Chronological Bible. Both are great. Before I read the Word, I always say a quick prayer to the Holy Spirit. The prayer is, “Good morning, Holy Spirit. I pray that you would open this Word up to me right now, write it on the tablet of my heart, and reveal its hidden mysteries to me. In Jesus’ name, amen.” Then I get into the Word, expecting the Holy Spirit to reveal something to me, and He always does.

Nothing fancy this morning, just a prayer from Psalm 143. David is praying this when the enemy is all around him. Take time to read this Psalm, and you can see the bad day he is having and the prayer to the Lord he prays. The last words of the Psalm are, “For I am your servant.” I love our verse today because it reveals a God with unfailing love each morning, who will show us where to walk, and that we can trust in Him. This is great news because some mornings I really need some help, and the coffee is doing very little.

David chose to fight his battle with prayer. Are you His servant, or are you spending all your time fighting a losing battle with your own tactics? When we first start out as Christians, we tend to trust the Lord with little bits and pieces until one day we trust in the Lord with all our heart. Just like I started out with a little coffee with my cream and sugar and then transitioned to just black coffee, we must do the same with our prayers. They must someday be like David’s prayers in this Psalm, totally relying on God to come through because we are His servants. Thirst for the Lord today with all your heart, mind, soul, and strength. Someday soon, you will be drinking the Lord up every morning, straight, with no sugar added.

Prayer: Father, help us to pray to You like David did. Help us to abandon all our own strength and totally rely on You today. In Jesus’ name, amen.
