No Hiding

Psalm 139:7

“Where can I go from your Spirit?

Where can I flee from your presence?”

We would play hide and seek in the dark when the kids were much younger. When it was dark outside, we would all come downstairs and pick who was “it.” That person would count to 30 or so and then go find all of us hiding. The kids loved it and still ask to play to this day. We had one rule: no one goes outside of the house. We all got a turn at being “it.” You knew everyone hiding was somewhere in the house, you just didn’t know where, and it was your job to find them.

Once we are aware of the Spirit of God in our lives, it is like playing hide and seek in the dark. You know God is looking for you, but oftentimes we hide and hope He does not find us. Why, you might ask? A number of reasons may come to mind, but the overwhelming truth is that we do not want to submit to the authority of the Lord in our lives.

In response to this, we play hide and seek with the Spirit of God (the Holy Spirit). We hide from His guidance and wisdom in exchange for our own reasoning and understanding, which the Bible calls out as foolish thinking.

We have to realize that there is nowhere we can hide from the Spirit of God, and eventually, He will find us trying to hide from Him. David wrote this particular Psalm and goes on to ask the Lord to search him and see if there is any offensive way in him, and to lead him in the way everlasting. The turn comes when we stop hiding from the Spirit of God and start asking Him to search our hearts for anything that does not line up with the Lord and remove it. Once we understand that the Spirit of God is forever with us and we cannot hide, we begin to let Him cleanse us from all unrighteousness. We stop running and start being led by the Spirit of God.

Prayer: Father, help us recognize Your Spirit in all we do. Help us open our hearts to You so we can be led by Your Spirit. In Jesus’ name, amen.
