“All your words are true; all your righteous laws are eternal.”
“Great peace have those who love your law, and nothing can make them stumble.”
The definition of stumble is “to trip or momentarily lose one’s balance; almost fall.” Stumbling requires one to proceed forward, believing your next step is solid, only to encounter an obstacle you did not see or underestimated. Being honest, I will admit to underestimating things and rarely not seeing life hit me where it counts. Interestingly enough, I cannot find anywhere in the Bible that assures us we will never encounter these kinds of situations.
Psalm 23:4 says, “Even though I walk through the valley…” If I knew of the valley of the shadow of death, I think I would run through it, or at least try to avoid it. It would seem, though, this is not the case. We find ourselves walking through most of the valleys in our lives, just wanting to get to the other side while avoiding as much damage as possible.
While we are in the valley, the Lord says that He is with us, but we rarely see Him or find His hand on us as we pay way too much attention to the valley and not enough to the Lord. Verse 160 reminds us that the Lord’s words (the Bible) are eternal. They are not for us to pull out when we need a boost or jump, but rather, they should be held up high as life principles we regard above our issues.
If you want to have peace in the valley and among your enemies or life issues, you should start by loving the law of the Lord. The law of the Lord should be like that stuffed animal you carried around all over the place as a young child, you could not be separated from it. As strange as it may seem, that little pony, bear, or kitty was a life companion, and you made sure it was with you all the time. You also made sure you went to bed with it, carried it around when you woke up, and played with it during the day. So should the word of the Lord be on your heart, mind, and mouth. This peace only comes as a result of this kind of love. Press into the promises of the Lord and get to know what He did through the prophets, kings, and disciples because those people are just like us.
Prayer: Father, I thank You that we are not just left alone on this earth to fend for ourselves. Your word promises that You will be there in the middle of it all, guiding us as we put our faith in You. I thank You for great peace in my life, no matter the circumstance. In Jesus’ name, amen.
