Psalm 108:12
“Give us aid against the enemy, for human help is worthless.”
The other day, I came downstairs and noticed that the downstairs was colder than the upstairs. Naturally, I went to the thermostat to check what was up. Even though the thermostat was on heat and set at 70 degrees, the downstairs was a chilly 60 degrees. Something was wrong. With wisdom, I called the AC repair guys because I was not the one to fix anything dealing with the AC.
As Christians, we often bully our way into being the fix-it guy. We naturally try to move with compassion and understanding when dealing with someone else’s issues, but when it comes to our own problems, we take charge, and the fix-it guy comes out in full swing.
The Bible says that we should cast our cares on the Lord because He cares for us (1 Peter 5:7). What does that look like in real life, you might ask? Well, it begins with an understanding of Christ and who He is and what He has done for you. He is the way, the truth, and the life, and He cares for you so much that He died on a cross so that you might have eternal life. Any Christian has heard that phrase, and it comes out so smoothly that we often miss the meaning and the gravity of it. David, writing this Psalm, realized that without God, he was helpless. For him, he declared that all the help in the world would never defeat his enemies.
What are your enemies? Is it a relationship? Is it a boss? Is it your past? Is it a bad habit you can’t kick, something destructive in your life? Your work to fix the issue has some value, but ultimately the victory will never be won without the Lord. Human help is worthless, that includes your own captain fix-it routine that you have used to get out of tight spots before. Victory is in Jesus, and without Him renewing you from the inside out, you will never walk in victory but will continue to go from failure to failure, wondering why things never go your way.
Today, instead of kicking at the issue in your life, pray that the Lord will make sin detestable to you. Pray that He will renew your heart and mind. Decide to let the Lord fix you by committing to Him. The Lord asked Paul, “Why do you kick against the goads?” Stop kicking at your problems and settle into Jesus, and let the grace of God give you peace that passes your understanding.
Prayer: Father, help us to notice the ugly pride in our lives that manifests itself in the “I can fix this” mode. Help us to turn it all over to You. I pray that we put our hands together and give it all to You and stop trying to fix, cure, mend, replace, repair, or merge issues we have in our lives. I pray that we give it all to You, Lord, in Jesus’ name, amen.
