Delivered from the Trap

Psalm 91:2-3

“I will say to the Lord, “My refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust!”  For it is He who delivers you from the snare of the trapper, and from the deadly pestilence.”

In today’s world, we usually don’t set snares and go out to hunt for a meal. In Bible days, that was the norm. A hunter would set a snare in order to trap an animal. The hunter would set the snare in a way that the animal would not expect it or see it. They would be walking in the forest and step on the snare, and the trap would go off, catching the animal. The hunter would then come and kill the animal caught in the trap.

As we walk through our daily life, the devil is setting snares for you and me. These snares are nothing you will see or hear beforehand. No, you won’t even suspect it. When you get caught in one of the devil’s snares, as we all will at some point, we have to realize it is the Lord who delivers us. When we are caught, we often try to wriggle our way out of the trap only to find ourselves further wrapped in the mess we were trying to get out of. We have all seen wild animals struggling to free themselves and ending up injuring themselves in the process. This is what happens to us when we use our own wisdom and intuition to free ourselves from one of Satan’s attacks. The key is to understand that the Lord is the one who delivers us. The Word says that Jesus is the way, the truth, and the life. He is the truth you are looking for and the life you so desperately need, and all you have to do is make Him your refuge and your fortress and trust in Him.

Pestilence, in this verse, is a deadly epidemic or infectious disease that is all around us. The Bible says to repeat the promises of God and to burn them on the tablet of your heart. We first lean on God to deliver us and then proceed through human understanding, like going to the doctor. If God supplied the workers and materials to build His temple in Exodus, then He can provide the doctors and medicines to cure anything. The song says, “Fear is a liar.” Fear lies to us and tells us there is no way out. If I stand on Psalm 91, then I can stand on the promise of deliverance from the pestilence.

The promises of God are yes and amen. Have you come to this place yet, or are you still on maybe and no? Get to know God through His promises. He will never let you down. Only God can provide a way where there is no way. Stand on it!

Prayer: Father, we commit our entire lives to You and make You the refuge of our lives. I trust completely in You and know that it is You who delivers us from the traps of the enemy and the deadly pestilence. In Jesus’ name, amen.
