As they plot their crimes, they say,
“We have devised the perfect plan!”
Yes, the human heart and mind are cunning.
The Battle of Currents began in the late 1880s with Thomas Edison and Nikola Tesla. Both of these men understood electricity very well. Thomas Edison was the father of direct current, the kind of power that goes in one direction like a battery, while Nikola Tesla developed alternating current. Alternating current can be reversed many times a second so it can be converted to different voltages using a transformer. Both of these men discovered a power we use today, and for the most part, we just assume it will always be ready to use as soon as we flip the switch.
Without electricity, we could not even brush our teeth in some cases. These great men are the reason for many of today’s gadgets, and it all started with the idea of using electricity for power. It was over 100 years earlier when Benjamin Franklin discovered electricity, but it was not usable until Edison and Tesla.
It says in Genesis that God made man in His own image. The big man upstairs fashioned you into a wonderful being that has God’s likeness all over it. Our human mind and heart can do many things. In Psalms, David proclaims that they can be very cunning. In James, it talks about the tongue being the most deadly part of the body. Jesus even uses the body parts to help us understand how we all fit together in His church.
It is clear to see how we have mastered the use of our body parts for good and for bad. While we think we use our body parts, mind, and heart for many good things, our efforts to use our own free will, heart, and mind are like Benjamin Franklin discovering electricity, what a show, but how are we to use it?
If electricity never got from the lightning bolt to a plug socket, our society would look very different. If you continue to operate under your own wisdom, you might get lucky and see a lightning bolt of progress, but it goes away fast and all you are left with are charred remains. You see, if you let the Lord into your life and give Him total control, it is like you just found a way to use the lightning bolt and control it. God wants you to give up control of your heart and mind and give them to Him. You may be tired of getting shocked by your own intuition, so today pray that God will take your heart and your mind. Ask Him to write His wisdom on the tablet of your heart and put His wisdom on the throne of your mind. Once you do that, it is like finding the heavenly plug socket, and you have just plugged in.
Prayer: Father, help us to master our cunning hearts. Your mercies are new every morning, and I pray that we flush our hearts every morning of the world and its wisdom. I pray that we take every thought captive and make it match with the Word of God. I pray that we get really good at spotting the devil and his cunning ways so that we may never fall victim to his schemes. In Jesus’ name, amen.
