In today’s world, our entertainment is largely reality TV. The Voice, The Bachelorette, 90 Day Fiancé, to name a few. Our society has figured out that people love watching people. We have all done it too, people-watching. At the mall, in a shop, or at a restaurant, we can’t help but notice others. What we all love is watching them and their circumstances.
In the past, these circumstances were written out and displayed as sitcoms like The Cosby Show or The Brady Bunch. I still love watching how those kids and parents would get themselves into a mess, and by the end of the show, the mess was cleaned up and everyone was back to normal, without strife.
Psalm 3 is a psalm David wrote when he was fleeing from his son Absalom. Absalom was going to take over the kingdom forcibly and most likely kill anyone who opposed him. He was listening to some very selfish-minded advisors.
Verse 2 says, “Many are saying of me, ‘God will never rescue him!’” You might be saying the same thing: “God, where are you in the crucible? You haven’t shown up yet, so I doubt you ever will.” But David makes a critical move that we all should make in times of trouble. He says, “But you, Lord.” (v. 3) The rest of the psalm is David reminding himself of who God is.
Here is a list of actions David remembers that God will do:
- The Lord is a shield around me.
- He lifts my head high.
- I call out and He answers me.
- I sleep because He sustains me.
- I will not fear even though the enemy is on all sides.
- From the Lord comes deliverance. (v. 8)
You may be stuck on verse 2, in the “where is God” moment. Today, make a list of things God is and has done for you. No matter how small the list is, it should remind you that from the Lord comes deliverance. There is an old saying worth repeating: “Complain and remain.” Your time would be better spent reminding yourself of who God is and spending less time reminding yourself of how big your issue is.
Everyone loves a comeback story. The journey back to deliverance begins with the Lord. Stop striving to fix things on your own, the deliverance comes from the Lord. Stop applying worldly wisdom to your problems, the deliverance comes from the Lord. Stop saying it will never get better, the deliverance comes from the Lord. David made it back to the throne after he let God handle the mess. Maybe it’s time you do the same.
Prayer: Father, help us to seek you in times of trouble and remind ourselves that deliverance comes from you. We thank you for that deliverance right now, in Jesus’ name. Amen.
