Why are the nations so angry?
Why do they waste their time with futile plans?
I can remember baby-proofing the house. It was not long before our new little girl was crawling around, putting everything in her mouth, and seeking to go anywhere she could. We had to put plastic covers on light sockets, baby door locks, and move all the little knickknacks up a little higher so we could achieve the baby-proofing. To our surprise, our curious little one would always find something to put in her mouth that was not supposed to be there. As she got a little older, the baby-proofing became baby-watching because a curious little girl wants to climb anything and everything. We had to watch her closely, eyes on her 24/7 as they say. She would begin to climb something, and we had to pull her off before catastrophe happened. “If she only knew that was dangerous?” we would say. “Don’t touch the stove, it could be hot, and you could burn yourself,” we would say, but you guessed it, a burned finger drove the lesson home like the warning from us could not.
Psalm 2 starts out with a question: Why? This question is only asked by the ones who understand God and His word. In part, it is like parents talking to little ones, warning them of dangers, and the little ones plotting in secret to touch what was forbidden. “Why?” is often the only thing we ask when life serves us up a pile of steaming poo. I may not be able to answer the “why,” but the end of this Psalm says it all: “But what joy for all who take refuge in Him!”
What is your refuge? Is it money? Is it friends? Is it substance abuse? Is it escaping from reality? If you take refuge in Him, you will be blessed, the verse says. This kind of “taking refuge” starts out with reading God’s word and asking the Holy Spirit to write it on your heart. After this commitment, a relationship will begin, and a funny thing happens, you stop asking why. The kind of why that comes from the steaming pile of poo side. The Lord starts directing your steps to avoid such piles of poo. In time, you should start to baby-proof your life to avoid the poo. All this starts with a small commitment to get into God’s word. If you have taken the time to read this, then you have already made the first step. God is waiting with open arms, and His wisdom will be there for the taking, all you have to do is start.
Prayer: Father, help us to find refuge in You today. Help us to begin a relationship with You through Your word and through prayer. I pray that all of us would begin to look to You so we can trust in You and stop asking why, but rather say, “I trust You, Lord, and I know You are the author of my tomorrow, and You have ordered my steps.” In Jesus’ name, amen.
