“Now I have come to explain to you what will happen to your people in the future, for the vision concerns a time yet to come.”
As I sit here at work, I often wonder what things will be like in the future. We all do that. The new job you just got, the new car you just purchased, or the old one you just fixed, if we only knew the future, things would be a little easier. Or would they?
I Corinthians 13:9-12 tells us, “9 Now our knowledge is partial and incomplete, and even the gift of prophecy reveals only part of the whole picture! 10 But when the time of perfection comes, these partial things will become useless. 11 When I was a child, I spoke and thought and reasoned as a child. But when I grew up, I put away childish things. 12 Now we see things imperfectly, like puzzling reflections in a mirror, but then we will see everything with perfect clarity. All that I know now is partial and incomplete, but then I will know everything completely, just as God now knows me completely.”
Looks like Paul even got partial answers, so that makes me feel a little better. Knowing the whole future would nullify your faith in Christ. As we walk by faith and not by sight, I can see that faith in God is more important than a fortune teller.
Daniel receives a vision about the future, and he states that he does not understand it. The Lord’s response is to write it down because it deals with a time yet to come. We can look back at the prophecy and put certain kingdoms in place and figure out who was the king of the South and the king of the North, and understand that Daniel was given a layout of the Mediterranean kingdoms up to and past the time of Christ. You can go hog wild on prophecy and its meaning and study the real history behind the verses and the prophecy, but that is for another time.
Today I want you to realize that things happening in your life may be that way because they serve a greater purpose. In chapter 11, the one telling Daniel the vision says that these things must come to pass and be fulfilled. Maybe your hardship is for a greater purpose other than annoying you. Maybe there is something God is doing that is bigger than you can see.
Daniel was given a great vision, and in chapter 12:1 it says, “…everyone whose name is found written in the book, will be delivered.” Without getting super into the end times, just realize that God has you in His hand no matter what chaos is going on around you. Verse 10 of chapter 12 states, “None of the wicked will understand, but those who are wise will understand.”
Today commit yourself to the pursuit of wisdom in the Word of God. Let the Holy Spirit write the words of the Bible on your heart so you can be ready to defend Christ and to tell people what He has done for you in hopes they will see the glory of the Lord and be changed. What separates the understanding of these things is not political awareness but wisdom, wisdom given from God alone. The wicked will continue to be wicked, but the wise will understand.
Prayer: Father, I pray that I pursue wisdom from Your Word every day. I pray that I never use the world’s wisdom in place of Yours, Lord. I pray that my heart and mind will continually be filled with Your loving grace and truth from the Word. In Jesus’ name, amen.
