Write It Down

Daniel 6:1

“…He wrote down the substance of his dream.”

It was not until recently that we could record people and play it back. Before the technology we use for recording things, we had to get the transcript of the speech or read a commentary of the one we were listening to. Someone had to write it down. As I have stated before, the Holy Spirit will pick a verse out of a chapter or chapters that I cannot move past. The rest of what I am reading either supports the verse or feels flat. I am to write about that verse.

Daniel wrote down his dream, and we read about it today. For centuries, we have been re-reading what other people have written down. My journey these past years has been a learning curve. I remember hearing from the Holy Spirit back in January of 2020, “I want you to write down what I show you.” I said, “Okay,” and started to write down whatever the Lord showed me. It has turned into a list of devotionals that starts in Genesis and now includes a devotional for nearly every chapter in the Old Testament and some books in the New Testament. Kind of cool.

I never could have done this on my own. I am not a writer in the least bit, the Lord is guiding this all the way. I look at the NIV Bible Emily gave me back in 2019, right before I started this quest, and it is humbling what the Lord has done. A good used Bible is always thicker than it was when it was new, and I am floored to look at the side of that Bible and see where I started and where I am now.

My wife and daughter, Sophie, have a phrase written on the side of their Bibles, “This is how I fight my battles!” I love that. Today, I want to encourage you to start writing down what the Lord gives you. Emily started to do that back in college, and her mirror in her apartment bathroom was covered with verses the Lord gave her that day. It marks a journey you are on, and before you know it, you will have a map that shows you where you came from. It all starts with writing it down. If you don’t do that, then whatever the Lord gives you will be lost in your brain for only you to recall, and we all know that when it goes in there, it might get lost.

At work, I spend a lot of time mapping and coming up with ideas. The idea takes about 10% of the time to generate, while getting it out of my mind and onto a sheet of paper often takes 90% of the time. The Lord may show you a verse and you write it down, good. Make sure you don’t stop meditating on it all day, the 90%. Polish your revelations from the Holy Spirit, because it might just be the thing that the Lord uses in someone’s life. Write it down.

Prayer: Father, help us to remember and write things down so we can see how you have guided us. I pray that we would recall the verses you have given us and proceed forward with confidence and a spirit of victory. In Jesus’ name, amen.
