The Taste of Obedience

Ezekiel 2:9-10, 3:1-3

Then I looked and saw a hand reaching out to me. It held a scroll, 10 which he unrolled. And I saw that both sides were covered with funeral songs, words of sorrow, and pronouncements of doom.

The voice said to me, “Son of man, eat what I am giving you—eat this scroll! Then go and give its message to the people of Israel.” So I opened my mouth, and he fed me the scroll. “Fill your stomach with this,” he said. And when I ate it, it tasted as sweet as honey in my mouth.Read full chapter

Colossians 3:23 says, “And whatever you do, do it heartily, as to the Lord and not to men.” As a kid, I read this verse and it gave me a different perspective on how I approach my work, whatever it is. I am to act as if my boss is Christ Jesus Himself. Keep this concept in mind the next time your boss asks you to do something you don’t like or deem beneath you. In other words, all our work should be viewed as if Christ told us to do it.

Remember when Jesus asked Peter to let his nets down one more time (Luke 5:4‑11). Peter wasn’t thrilled, but he agreed because it was Jesus who was asking. You know what happened next: a huge catch of fish and the beginning of Peter’s life as a disciple of Jesus.

In Ezekiel’s time, he was in Babylon, away from home, yet right where God wanted him. The verses in Ezekiel give us a glimpse of how we should respond when the Lord calls us. God showed Ezekiel a scroll filled with lament, mourning, and woe, hardly fun times, yet still a message from the Lord.

God told Ezekiel to eat the scroll, and he did. You’d think lament, mourning, and woe would taste bitter, but it tasted like sweet honey. Whether the message seemed good or bad, it tasted sweet because it came from the Lord. We need to reach a point in our walk with Christ where anything He speaks to us tastes like sweet honey, no matter the context or direction.

So we must ask ourselves: Are we willing to receive the word the Lord speaks, or will we prejudge how it will “taste” before we hear it? If we hesitate, the simple reason is lack of faith, we don’t fully trust the Lord. Some of us live a double life, professing to be Christians while ignoring His direction. Today is your day to eat the scroll and obey all the Lord is calling you to do.

God instructed Ezekiel to tell the Israelites everything He commanded, whether they listened or not (Ezek. 3:11). Verse  20 warns, “If righteous people turn away from their righteous behavior and ignore the obstacles I put in their way, they will die.” If you’re on a destructive path, pay attention to the “obstacles,” people God places in your way, to steer you back to Him. We all need an Ezekiel in our lives, someone who hears God’s word and finds joy in doing His will, no matter the context. And we are all called to be that Ezekiel for others.

Prayer: Father, I pray today for everyone on the road to destruction. May they recognize the obstacles You place before them and heed Your direction, turning from sinful practices. I ask that they recommit their lives to You, Jesus, becoming testimonies of Your grace and truth. I also pray that whenever You speak to us, it will taste like sweet honey, regardless of the message. May our joy come from following You. In Jesus’ name, amen.
